Does anyone know what Model Singer this is? I am very interested in this but want to make a wise choice? What should I look for? Is this a good price? Does this need to be in a cabinet to work? Thanks Here is the link http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/atq/2409616351.html

kwhite 05-30-2011 06:30 AM

Looks like a 99 but to be sure you would have to have the serial number. Maybe you can e-mail them and ask.

abdconsultant 05-30-2011 06:33 AM

make sure it has the knee lever and key to the case.

dniederhaus 05-30-2011 06:35 AM

I have e-mailed and asked if I could call them. Can you tell me how the serial number tells me how to recognize what model it is? Is this a good price? Not a feather weight, right?

jrhboxers 05-30-2011 06:45 AM

It is NOT a featherweight. No sure about what it is. It is a bobbin shuttle machine. They take a while to get used to.

kwhite 05-30-2011 06:48 AM

No it is not a featherweight. Once you have the serial number you come to the internet and google singer sewing amchine serial number lookup and that list will not only tell you what it is but when and where it was manufactured.

Rose L 05-30-2011 06:50 AM

There is a list online that you can look the serial number up on. The list will tell you what it is, where and when it was mfg. That would need to be in a cabinet, cabinets can be found if you look for them. I can't tell from the picture if it's motorized or not but if it is try to find out the condition of the wiring, it may need to be rewired. Also try to find out if the motor on it is good or not. If it's a treadle, new belts can be purchased for them.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-30-2011 06:53 AM

It looks like a 66 Redeye but the pic is dark. Price sounds good!!
Let us know if you get it :D

sueisallaboutquilts 05-30-2011 06:53 AM

Just looked again and I don't think it's a Redeye but it sure is pretty!

thepolyparrot 05-30-2011 06:54 AM

It's a 128, Vibrating Shuttle type with what look to be the La Vincedora decals. :) Very cool machine.

The "La Vincedora" decals were only put on the 3/4 machines (28 or 128) and the bobbin winder is up near the handwheel, so it's a 128.

Charlee 05-30-2011 06:55 AM

It's going to be (my guess, and we KNOW what that's worth...don't run to the bank with it!!! ;) ) either a 27, 127, 28 or 128...hard to tell from the photo they show of the machine, and cutting off the faceplate in the photo.
Pretty machine...I'd make them an offer...ask about attachments, extra bobbins or shuttles, motor, etc.

It doesn't necessarily need a cabinet to work, it depends on whether or not it's in a case...

I agree, if it was the whole machine in the picture you could tell what machine it is. I think it is a shuttle bobbin machine....
As long as it comes with the knee lever and the top of case and key....I would make an offer...she is very pretty.

dniederhaus 05-30-2011 07:27 AM

Thank you all so much for taking the time to answer my post. I am waiting on a reply from the seller, I will let you know what the outcome is.

dniederhaus 05-30-2011 07:29 AM

Oh no scary!!!!

Charlee 05-30-2011 08:20 AM

Heh! Not so much...and once you actually do it, it's kind of fun! :)

thepolyparrot 05-30-2011 09:10 AM

They're wonderful to sew with. Some people prefer FMQ with them over their model 15's. I keep meaning to try it someday, but my 27/28 models are buried in the garage at the moment and I've gotten attached to that big class 15 bobbin that I can replace even with a quilt on the machine.

But, I've pieced quilts with the 27/28's. And my little 128 treadle has a picot/hemstitching attachment that produces such a beautiful effect on linen - much easier to control than the 15. That amount of control is great for free-motion embroidery, too - you can sew just a stitch or two, reposition the fabric, couple more stitches, reposition, etc. :)

sometimes refered to as a bullet bobbin...

dniederhaus 05-30-2011 03:21 PM

Hello everyone, just thought that you would like to know that I still haven't heard from the seller. But I just posted another find here is the link:
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/gms/2407102239.html
What do you all think???

gramalama9 05-30-2011 03:29 PM

Looking at that excellent photo....it's my 99 in the flesh! Does it have a round, drop in bobbin? If it has an oval, sort of, bobbin case, it's not a 99. Mine is in a walnut cabinet, purchased in 1955....and stilll in good use.
It's not a featherweight, but I'd bank on 99. A wonderful, work horse of a little Singer....not to be found every day.

The seller just sent me this picture:

gramalama9 05-30-2011 06:17 PM

I have the EXACT model.....you will never regret owning this machine, and it looks like it's in perfect condition. Right down to the felt spool pad....which mine is missing! the wonderful thing about it is that it will accept a low shank, screw on attachment to enable you to snap on all sorts of feet. And if the original feet and accessories come with it, that's another plus. Nothing makes better buttonholes than the Singer Buttonholer, which came with mine. And I have never had a narrow hemmer foot on later high priced machines, that does as neat a job as the one in the box of feet and fittings that were included. Back in 1955, I paid $99 for it....in a walnut cabinet, and the price included 6 lessons at the Singer Center on how to use the attachments. I always said $99 for a 99.....a bargain, indeed!

LaurieE 05-30-2011 06:39 PM

It looks like it's in great shape. I say buy it. $75 for a vintage machine is a fantastic bargain.

twinkie 05-31-2011 03:31 AM

The first picture is a 128 for sure. These are great little machines. The portable case generally is a Bentwood wooden case with the word Singer in gold on the case. The other ones were treadle machines. My 128 has a knee arm to operate it and it is a 3/4 machine. I love it. It does have a vibrating shuttle for the bobbin. The second one is a 99 and both are 3/4 machines. You can find them a little cheaper on E-bay, however you have to take into consideration the shipping cost. $75 is a good price in that condition.

DEFINITELY go for this one!
Modern bobbin - drops into the machine from the top.
I've got the hand crank version. :)

sandpat 05-31-2011 04:38 AM

So....which did you get???? I got a 128 last week- my 1st venture into the vintage models. I just love it...shutttle bobbin and all!

CircleSquare 05-31-2011 05:11 AM

Can someone tell me what a vibrating shuttle is?

my mother got her's in the mid-50s as well, and my sister is still using it-I learned to sew on it. It is simple and sews a beautiful straight stitch-

Thanks for sharing this info. I passed it along to my sister who has a 28 or a 128. I don't remember which one now, but I know this info will help her out. Thanks again.

katcox 05-31-2011 08:28 AM

for 75.00 I wouldn't care if you like it buy it.

KLO 05-31-2011 11:48 AM

I just recently got a 128 similar to the first photo also but if you were just going to buy one of the two machines and the second one was the same or less in price than the first, I would go with that one. Why? Because it has the regular drop in bobbin (easier to use and fill) and looks to be well kept. All the being said, if money is not object and you can get a good deal, I would make an offer on the 128 (first photo) since they are moving and maybe get them both. It does mention in the first ad that it has a wooden case with a key so it sounds like the Bentwood case (I always called these "lunchbox" cases because they look like my father's old lunchbox that he took to work) and therefore is a portable. Good luck! Let us know what you end up with. Remember, you can never be too rich, too thin, or have too many machines!!! lol
