I don't sew over pins any more. I have, accidentally, done so, though. Broken a couple needles which, over time (not immediately) I believe has caused burrs , which led to a machine repair of almost $90. Not cool.

Sew over them all the time. I don't need no fancy sewing machine for sewing straight lines. The Bernina is a truck. So I break a needle occasionally. Mostly tough I press my seams so they interlock and I don't need to use pins.
But that occasional piecing where not all the seams interlock, pins are the only thing that will keep that quilt in line. |
i sew over them, too - but I have an old Singer and its a work horse. I suppose if i had a computerized machine, I would be more careful.

I use silk pins, but not much. I usually don't sew over the pins. I don't want the possible damage or expense.

I sew over the pins and rarely slow down. I have done this all of my sewing life and I am to old to change my ways now. LOL

I come from making clothes where we were encouraged to sew over pins. The pins had to be put in at right angles to the seam. The theory is the needle slides down the round pin without breaking.
in patchwork and quilting is appears to be a quilt police issue. If I'm sewing a bag were there are numerous layers to hold together I keep pins in, always at right angle to seam. For a quilt I would only keep in the pins if the fabric may move if it is taken out. looks like it is personal choice. |
