I've been quilting my top and I notice that I lick my fingers alot. I know it is unsanitary, but I can't seem to sew without licking. How about you?

EllaBud 03-19-2010 02:21 PM

Nope. Have never done that. I cook a lot and am extremely careful about sanitation in my home.

Sharon321 03-19-2010 02:23 PM

No, not unsanitary to quilt receipent, bacteria dies when saliva dries up. It is unsanitary to you, depending on where your fingers have been.

I have very dry hands & I do the same thing - but isn't that what the washing machine is made to take care of?

MaryStoaks 03-19-2010 03:56 PM

I do wet my fingers sometimes. I always wash quilts after they are finished so I don't feel guilty.

redkimba 03-19-2010 04:16 PM

have you tried that "tacky finger" stuff? I bring home some from work when it's last bit of stuff in the can. It works wonders for dry fingers.

I try not to lick my fingers because I know where they've been. ;)

I don't lick my fingers, but I manage to frequently stab myself w/pins so there's probably minute traces of my blood on things I've made *giggles*

CAROLJ 03-19-2010 04:33 PM

I lick my fingers while sewing, never when cooking. I don't think it is any worse than moistening your thread.

Granna of 5 03-19-2010 04:45 PM

I don't lick my fingers, but do use glycerin on my hands to prevent dryness when sewing.

littlehud 03-19-2010 04:50 PM

i don't lick my fingers when I sew but I put the thread in my mouth when I thread a needle. It gives it a better point. I'm glad to hear any bacteria is gone when it dries.

CAROLJ 03-19-2010 05:06 PM

Most bacteria is gone, but things such at hepatitis lives longer. But figure it this way, by time I finish a quilt it may be years so any germs I have left are probably in an advance stage of mummification

Somebunny 03-19-2010 05:56 PM

Lick and be happy. Just lick-it. Lick over here! Sorry...licking was just too fun a subject to pass up :)

sewnsewer2 03-19-2010 07:28 PM

Nope, never done that.

Boston1954 03-19-2010 08:00 PM

I have to when I am knoting the thread. I try to make sure that I wash my hands before I start. I know we are supposed to eat a peck of dirt in a lifetime, but not all in one day. ;-)

Rhonda 03-19-2010 08:22 PM

If you are one who puts pins in your mouth as you sew or like me I put my needle in my mouth to hold it inbetween tacking, it isn't any differant from licking your finger. Sooooo now that I have admitted to one of my bad habits will anyone buy from me anymore??? LOL LOL

And I don't play well with thimbles so I have contributed a little blood over the years as well!! Blood sweat and tears isn't that what we are supposed to contribute?? LOL

Oklahoma Suzie 03-20-2010 05:24 AM
