I'm getting ready to do the handwork for Over the River quilt -- you are supposed to draw the pattern onto the fabric to embrodier and then line the fabric with muslin before you start stitching.

The fabric that I chose for the embrodery is rather heavy in itself and I think that it would be just tooo heavy lined. I think the reason for lining is so that the floss doesn't show. Do you think I could get away with iron on interfacing????

My Aunt did not use the muslin as it was stated in the pattern. She use a thin layer of batting of some kind. I would have to verify with her to see what exactly she used. The stitches did not show and it gave the squares a little extra body. It turned well enough that she won Grand Champion at the county fair.

I think iron on interfacing would add too much stiffness.

My thought also.

Try a test and see. Lay some of the floss behind your fabric with and without a layer behind and see how it looks. Also may want to do some test stitches to see how it works for you.

IF you want to use iron on anything.... do it BEFORE you trace the design.

I just use Kona snow..nothing behind it at all..works ok!
If you do use an interfacing try it on a scrap of your fabric first...I doubt it will make any difference...though a lightweight interfacing will NOT make it stiff, it might however turn yellow over time!

If I remember correctly the embroidery for that pattern is done in strips. Yes?? Would a sulky stabilizer work as they are used in machine embroidery? Just a thought.
