Like some of the others have commented, I usually use insulbrite. I did use flannel on some dresser scarves for my sons bedroom and they turned out nicely too.

I use Thermore batting, it gives substance and quilts up nicely, but does not give uneven bumps in the table runners or table mats, just fills out the quilting designs. It is about the same thickness as a piece of fabric, but quilts up nicer. It also adheres to the fabric so stays in place when quilting.

i love this runner!! So cute!

I use Warm & Natural in my runners & placemats. i feel much better putting a hot cup of coffee on them or something similar. Plus, I try lots of free motion on my items, so I really like batting. I sell them too & haven't had any complaints w/washing or drying.

Yes, I think they act like a table protector that way, without looking tacky.

wraez 12-10-2010 04:44 PM

I was wondering if anyone uses Peltex (the kind used for the center of fabric postcards) for their table runners or even place mats?

I will use flannel, or even a very thin fleece, so things sit flat when placed on the topper

I do this too, also great in baby quilts for warmer climates

Aaargh! The No Fabric pledge. After checking my stash, methinks I need to sign on, too and make up what I have. I probably could stay busy all year!

I also like Hobbs Thermore batting...very thin so the runner lays flat, but shows the quilting lines.

Some I do and some I don't. It is according if it is for someone who will really appreciate it or for someone who may not even look twice at it.

MerryQuilter 12-11-2010 02:18 AM

Like the feel of batting and love to hand quilt a little runner.

It is an absolute joy to use and the skirt did not need to be quilted at all as a result. i would certainly use this for table runners in future and probably would not use any backing fabric either.

Is this the fleece like sweatshirts are made of or something else? Can't think what you mean by fleece !

iltoaz 12-12-2010 05:57 AM

In the past I have used fleece or runners or table toppers. Just gives the project a little body.

Butterfly Queen 12-12-2010 06:06 AM

I have always used flannel or felt for my table runners.

lclang 12-12-2010 02:40 PM

Sometimes I use batting and sometimes not. I like the cheap fleece throws (about $2.00 each) They make really nice batting for table runners and candle mats. You can get quite a few out of one throw.

montanajan 12-12-2010 05:06 PM

I use flannel - always wash it first bacause it may shrink.

I always do because I like the feel and look much better.

elsieirene 12-13-2010 06:28 PM

Great idea I am going to try it. I have 4 to finish up.
Thanks!

laughingquilter 12-13-2010 07:03 PM

I've done it both ways. Lately, I've just been putting a layer of flannel between my top and back and it gives it a nice weight.

teraulerson 10-05-2017 08:40 AM

Gale,
newbie here, is this iron interfacing like (heatnhttp://www.joann.com/heat-n-bond-ult...s/1069681.htmlbond) ultrahold, iron on adhesive? I was going to post a picture but, everything I try to post it says the quiltboard says no.

Thank you,
Tina

Use batting and maybe also Insulbrite.

mountainwoman 10-15-2017 06:16 PM

Yes, I always do use batting; specifically, I prefer Soft n' Bright needled polyester batting, 1/8" thick by the Warm Company. It is perfect for table runners!

Snooze2978 10-16-2017 07:14 AM

I like the feel of a little bit of "umph" in my table runners and placemats. Think they look better and stay straighter with it. Also been using batting as a stablizer on these book pocket pillows that seems to be the hit these days. Using my scraps for the stablizer so the font stitching doesn't bunch up.

maviskw 10-17-2017 03:35 AM

I made a table topper with batting that was too thick. My friend told me to quilt it heavily, so I did a small meander on it. (Is that a stipple?) That worked beautifully! The center was a medallion of a large flower so I sort of outlined the flower. That made that part pouf up a little and the back looks extra beautiful as the pattern is sewn into the plain fabric.
