I have been considering that in my new room. If you use them how do you like them?
|
I have never heard of them. I keep mine in drawer in sewing desk .

I never thought to use them for scissors... Could beat looking for them in the drawer... I have quite a few pair... Of course, the trick for me would be to remember to put them back up there... :) :) (What can I say - I know my own limitations)
|
Kara I got so frustrated with myself over never having a pair of scissors where I needed them that I tied a pair to each machine and to the cutting table. That way I could not steal them from myself and lose them. I need to do something like that with my pincushions too. I am forever looking for a pin cushion when I need one.

Caution: using magnet near computerized sewing machines.
Just a head up.... |
Really Texasquilts. I hadn't thought of that. Do you know how close is too close?
|
I had heard magnets and computers don't get along. I don't know how close is too close.
|
I just keep the essentils at every spot....
scissors....snips....ripper....marker....pencil... .extension magnet....pin cushions.....etc.... I got a thing you put around your neck...tried it.... kept poking me in the belly and strangling myself....enough of that!.....:-)..... |
I've had every kind of scissor trick known to quilters to make sure they can be right w/in reach...:)Prob the most dangerous one for me was the one you actually attach to yourself and the scissors are on a string pull that retracts...not safe:)If you quilted in a standing position, this might work!LOL I did use that when I was hand quilting and kept the scissors ''on the piece I was quilting that way(pin it to the quilt). I find the best old method to easily find my scissors is a scissor 'faub'. You can make them yourselves! I found an old vintage type necklace...took a section out of it...attached a piece to be able to attach the faub to my scissors...and, no matter where I put them, they are easy to find and easy to pick up...even if by the end fo the faub:) This also makes your scissors different in a group and not mistaken for someone elses. I attach usually a charm or something on the very end. If you sew w/a basket by your chair , this is the tail that will be hanging over your sewing basket...so, you just grab the end of the faub and pull them out to use. Not only is it practical....but, fun finding faub stuff:)Skeat...who has the magnet pocket thing for snippets....I never use the magnet other then to hold the pocket where I need it:)
|
I have a mail and key holder on the wall in the sewing room. it has 4 "slots" to keep glasses, etc in and 5 cuphooks across the bottom originally used to hold keys, but I put a pair of scissors on each hook.. they are always near when I need them.
I too have paper and template scissors clearly marked so everyone knows which ones they are. |
I have removed all magnetic things from my sewing room as I ended up with all my pins sticking together and them sticking themselves to the scissors and wrecking the blade.
The only thing I keep with a magnet is the extending wand to pick things up from under the table and I keep it well away from everything else. |
I found one of those sticky backed hooks in the hardware store and I stuck it to the side of my machine. Now if I can just remember to put my scissors there so I can find them the next time I need them.
|
I keep my scissors in a small wire-like utensil holder that is separted into four sections. I got it at the Dollar Store. I have another one for rulers and markers.
|
I buy the good quality kid scissors when school supplies are out and keep lots of them all over my sewing room. The are great for snips and clips. And if they migrate to the other rooms of the house no big deal. I would think the mag strip would make the scissors magnets too. Would that happen?

( I would think the mag strip would make the scissors magnets too. Would that happen) Yes!:)Any metal object like scissors slid across a magnet makes the metal magnetic:)We learned this in 8th grade science and I went home, picked up my mom's good sewing scissors and tried it...wow..it was amazing! The teacher was right!LOL Every pin w/in a 5ft radious flew to those scissors!! My dad had to take them to work (he was a machinist) and de-magnetize them:)I think I came out of grounding about a year ago....:)SKeat

I have one of those also; I keep it attached near the floor on one of the metal table legs - it has a spring on it, so my Cat loves it !

The magnetic sounds interesting, however I'm not so sure I would want it too close to my sewing machine. It would though keep scissors safe while they are put away.
I use several different scissors while sewing and at the cutting and pressing table. I hate searching for things while I'm workng so I ended up making up a sewing tote from a flatware caddy. I can easily move this place to place. I put crafter's foam at the bottom of each section to protect the scissor tips. Most of the time the tote sits to the right of my sewing machine, taking up only 9x6 inches of space. Nearly everything that I use while sewing is in there including misting bottles, one with water and one with starch and there's even a pincushion attached to the end. Here are a couple photos. |

LOL Skeat. I guess I will not waste the money then. I can see myself getting very angry when I reach for a pair of scissors and get stuck by a stuck pin. Thanks |
Hi! I have 3 of those small plastic size Folger's coffee containers for my scissors, pencils/pens and rulers. I don't let magnetics near my new sewing machine, really screw up the innerds (computer) on it.
|
I have peg boards hanging behind sewing area and cutting wall so I have them hanging everywhere. I also have the cheap ones laying everywhere so the grandkids and husband know to get the cheap ones and not my sewing room scissors.
|
I'm curious, how many scissors do you have around your house? Myself, I have two in the kitchen, one in the living room where I sit cause I'm always either stitching something or crocheting. Bathroom has a small scissors for hubby's mustache and the sewing room has about 8 of them plus 4 rottery cutters. The 8 in the sewing room are: 1 for paper only, 1 applique, pinking, 2 really good ones for fabric only and 4 cheapy ones from Walmart. Oh, forget the big set of fancy cut-edge scissors for stationery/scrapbook.
|
although they say today's computers are not as effected I just wouldn't chance it.
|
I have a magnetic strip for knives, in my kitchen...love it there.
In my quilting room, on my cutting table, I keep my scissors and rotary cutters in coffee mugs from when I had each of my dogs; so far, I have an I Love My Minature Schnauzer (with a drawing of one), an I Love My Shetland Sheepdog (with a drawing), and Sunny the Wonder Dog (with a photo of her on it.. Border Terrier). We've decided to find our next dog at a shelter or rescue so it may be a mix breed so we'll do the photo technique again. I'll use it for coffee and tea until that one is gone. I love my pegboard, but had to find a great purpose for these special mugs to be displayed. Cathy... quiltswithdogs |
Use it, love em. I set mine up just in front of my sewing machine and it is very handy. Sure beats having to look for my scissors every time I need to use them!
|
My scissors hang on a board by the machine, or in my kit that I take with me to my quilting group.
|
I love that little wooden tote, brilliant idea!!!
|
that could work well i'm sure. i have a large block of wood, like a knife holder but for scissors. i've had it for years and years.

I use a magnetic strip on the wall about five feet from my machine and the pin-pickerupper sits with pencils below it. No problems over several years. I think you would have problems if you stuck something magnetic on your computerized machine. As for losing scissors, mine are sacrosanct. My husband has a stash of them in each room along with a flashlight; he never saw a scissors in a dollar store that he didn't like.Fine by me.

Instead of a magnet I use a peg board in back of my machine mounted on the wall and use the "hooks" like in stores to hang my sissors on. Works well for me. |
