I love plaids!!! In fact, right now a group I'm in is doing a half-square triangle swap with plaids and muslin and I know when the quilts get put together it's going to look terrific.

I have but used them but it seems that the print quality is not always very good. I use them only if I can hold them in my hand to really see if the print is good, and on grain. This is because I do alot of small scale projects and it really shows up when the print of the plaid is not straight. It makes it appear as though the seam is not accuarate. Stripes can do the same thing.
Homespuns are better than printed plaids , but the looser weave , makes it a bit problematic with raveling .

I use them. They look great with florals.

Maurene 08-09-2010 03:23 PM

I find them hard to use, I've fussy-cut them to get an exact balance, it depends on the plaid whether yo can do that or not. I like plaid for sashing; very occasionally an even plaid can work evenly in sashing.

I avoid them like the plague LOL
I don't like the idea of having to match them or worry about the lines not being perfectly straight

Sharon321 08-09-2010 04:04 PM

I never worry about the plaid running straight. I think it adds to the quaintness of the quilt.

I am currently making a double sawtooth star quilt using
shirting prints and woven plaids for my son.
I only have 5 more blocks to piece.
Roberta Horton(well known quilter) says its okay if your plaids aren't cut perfectly straight. She calls it casually off grain, it looks good and is lots easier.

Some beautiful plads out there. Just picked up a Christmas one. Have used them sparingly - Mainly in a memory quilt for a man from men's shirts.

OneMoreQuilt 08-09-2010 09:23 PM

I love plaids but don't use them often because I'm OCD about them being cut perfectly straight and facing the right way!!

Mary, just love your turning twenty homespun, it is fabulous, just my kind of quilt!

I used plaids in a quilt and they look wonderful I made a king size quilt with them. Now let me see if I can send a picture.

MillieH 08-10-2010 06:15 AM

Marian--that's quite a quilt--and a real beauty. I wonder how long it would take me to do that???

pieces 08-10-2010 06:46 AM

No I do not use plaids. Bought a couple to make a barn quilt.
But just can't get attached to them.

mayday 08-10-2010 09:32 AM

why not? I think they are wonderful!

Deborah12687 08-10-2010 10:36 AM

I work with lots of plaids and all I do is pull out a thread to square it. The threads are easy to pull out.

Maurene 08-10-2010 11:08 AM

Ditto!!!!

I just love that quilt, Marian! What's the pattern called?

bcquilt 08-10-2010 12:28 PM

i would not be able to live with the plaids in my quilt if they were not straight in the square, so I avoid them.

Very nice!

dpeterson 08-10-2010 04:10 PM

I have been making a blanket for my husband and I and it uses two different plaid patterns. I don't like how some of them aren't QUITE straight, but oh well. I like the way it looks! I used the same fabrics for a toddler quilt for my son and it looks GREAT.

I'd say if you find a plaid you like, go for it!

pookie ookie 08-10-2010 04:13 PM

I use plaids in scrappy quilts. I use them to create shapes where none exist. Faux piecing. Plaids are pretty cool.

Marion and Betty - absolutely love your both quilts. My daughter loves stars and plaid so I''m hoping to make her one with both for Christmas. Maybe the friendship star? not sure and not sure what color for the background

Lockeb 08-10-2010 05:57 PM

I used plaids in this one...here's a link to where I posted pictures before.....I love the way that it pulled the quilt together.....I have several plaids in my stash so I am bound to use it again :-)

I love plaids and have used them in several of my quilts. I think they add a quaint kind of country charm to certain quilts. I like to use them cut on the diagonal so being not straight is intentional and you don't have to worry about keeping the lines straight.

bjdemir 08-10-2010 07:46 PM

Both post quilts are beautiful. Great inspriration for trying plaids.

purplefiend 08-10-2010 08:21 PM

The pattern is called Star Window a quilter friend designed the pattern from several patterns and came up with this.
