RocknQuilts - thank you for your tutorial and all of the others at that blogspot - I found lots of things to try and the tutorials are so well illustrated.

I use this mostly with minky or flannel backed quilts. It's nice having the soft edge come around to the front.
I do it all ways, just depends on the quilt. Today, my UFO hopefully will be ready to bind, and I plan on bringing the fabric from the back. Just a personal preference is all.
I do it from time to time. Especially on small items, like placemats.
I bring my front fabric to the back - this is what my mother had taught me - I do this on quilts and table runners. I do not enter my quilts in competition though.
Thank you all for your participation on this subject. Jodimarie and AlienQuilter thank you for your precise and easy to follow directions and RocknQuilts thank you for the tutorial. Everyone’s comments have been a great help and very much appreciated! Now I think I will go finish off my quilt with a double fold back to front binding!
I always do it this way. I cut my binding 2.5", fold in half and attach.
Wow, this is a cool idea. I'm just learning about quilting and it's soooo amazing..Everytime I open the quilt board and start reading you posts...I learn so many new ideas, hints, tricks, it's just amazing. Just when I think I have enough to start a quilt...someone else comes up with a better and easier idea....I'll never get my first machine patches started...lolololololol. I've been with the same great man for 31 years, I learn a pretty stoic lifestyle but I honestly think.......Quilting could be my drug....it's so addicting. All I want to do is work on my projects. I went to work the other night and all night all I could think about is what I was going to do the next day and how I could play my next projects, supplies I need, being fabric.....Oh NO, I've got it bad, lololol.....Do I need help or what?
i do it on quick qiults but not on the quilts that i want to be treasured
No, never! ! ! I really love doing bindings.
I only did this once - it didn't look too bad however, I didn't think it looked as finished off as it does when you fold it to the back.
To me, the backside I feel gets seen infrequently, where one hopes any mistakes they have made will rear their ugly little heads - instead of on the front for all the world to see - LOL      |

I do this most of the time. J J

How do you complete it when you fold over the backing? Top stitch on the machine? Do it by hand?
I do bindings on quilts like this occasionally. I use it all the time on tablerunners, table toppers and wall hangings. I use the method that one of the ladies described. Cut twice as wide as you want the binding to be. Fold the edge in half, so the raw edge of the backing can tuck behind the edge of the quilt and batting. Then fold the folded edge of the backing over the front of the quilt and machine or hand stitch down. The corners do take a little practice to get nice looking miters. When I am trying something like this, I make a few pot holders using scrap fabric. That way you get to practice the technique and making the corners look nice on a small project and know just how it works before you tackle your quilt. I can always use a few more pot holders... or give them away with wedding shower gift.

I do anytime my backing coordinates with the front.
I do.
I did it once, wasn't really happy with the way it looked though.
I do on baby quilts, picnic quilts, etc....things that are going to be washed alot. I make the binding wider and when I turn it to the front I sew it down with a decorative stitch. Fast and easy.
This method is only used if your Backing is the complementry colour that you would choose for the Binding. Taking care that you have enough allowance
for turning. |
I have done this also. It was a traditional way in the 30's. The quilts that my grandmother made during this time have the binding from the back to the front--not seperate binding. I think it is fabric saving.
i do it almost all the time as long as the back matches really well its the easiest way although once in a while ill put binding on it if its something special.

I also use this method 'cause I suck at binding!
I take the point of each corner and fold it back to the quilt and then fold over the edges and make a kinda miter, pin it and then sew the rest of the edges. I also do the "birthing" method for most of the TV throws and baby blankets. |
That is the way I was taught to do it. Most of my quilts, I use the backing. I usually pick my material to match the front.
No, I don't. I do a double-fold binding attached by machine on both sides.
I often do this and sometimes do the separate one. I cut it wide enough to do double it and I use a walking foot going slow and am usually more pleased with the results and it is WAY FASTER. My first separate binding was on a 108 by 110 cal king and handstitching seemed to go on for days.
I do this often, I find it the easiest way for me sharet
I use to do it all the time. Lately I have made separate binding. I like either way. I think it looks better with a separate binding. What ever floats your boat.
Yes I have but when I do I will double the fabric.
I do, always have, always will.
I do
i've used it a time or two on quilts, but use it all the time for wall hanging. It cut down on having to buy a traditional frame.
Great Idea. I never thought of it.. Such great help on this subject..thanks!
i do it all the time.
Yes, that's what works best for me. I use my machine to bind.
My first quilt was a kit and I did it alone with just the little knowledge that I got from watching my mom. When I got to the binding part I was stuck. So I wrapped the border under and whipped stitched it to the back. When I look at it now I kind of smile. If my mom noticed anything she never let on.FayZ
