I never seem to buy whites or blacks, solid or print. Don't know why.

yonnikka 06-29-2011 05:35 AM

You have touched your unconscious inner mind with your analytical outer vision: you are buying the color of your name: ROSE mary. You call yourself Rosie, right?

I have an herb in my garden that is lovely dark GREEN, called Rosemary.

My intuition says it is time you made a quilt especially for you to keep. One that embodies all your inner dreams, wishes and aspirations, a work of art. And I don't consider it a problem at all; it is a spontaneous growing message just for you.

Fabaddict 06-29-2011 05:36 AM

ROFLOL - mine is blue - any shade. Once a year I go on a real binge - write downt he colors I am "short" in and try to get only those'

sandyo 06-29-2011 05:38 AM

everybody has their favorites

lyndad 06-29-2011 05:51 AM

Lately I've been drawn to the Asian fabrics, I have made one quilt with them and I really like the deep bold colors.

kateyb 06-29-2011 05:56 AM

I think we all have certain colors we like and buy more of. I like greens and browns. Since I make quilts for family (I have a large extended family) and friends I buy the colors they like to make quilts for them, so my stash is fairly well rounded. I am low on yellow and orange. They are harder to find I think and I use them to add zing to quilts.

jgriinke 06-29-2011 06:18 AM

I had the same problem with blues and greens. When I was going on a shop hop with friends, I made note of what colors I was lacking, and that was my mission for the trip. Try to buy only the colors that I was lacking in. It worked for me.

Olivia's Grammy 06-29-2011 06:18 AM

I tend to buy my favorite colors so sometimes I buy colors I don't like at all. It gives the quilt more interest.

DebQuilter50 06-29-2011 06:26 AM

I say that any excuse to buy fabric is a good one.

catrancher 06-29-2011 06:33 AM

I realized one day that I had all reds, pinks, and blues and almost no orange. I made it a rule when I was in a fabric store that I couldn't buy those colors, or that I could only buy orange. Now my stash is fairly even.

jitkaau 06-29-2011 06:38 AM

I think in all honesty we must have preferences. I was doing 'show and tell' with my new neighbour who also likes to quilt. Her quilts were mostly autumn tones - greens, browns, mustards. Mine were mostly pinks, navy blues, purples and light blues.

Dkm 06-29-2011 06:46 AM

Love the greens and mauve colors and I also tend to move in that direction. My problem is other colors seem to never look right together. I have a very hard time with blue(my least favorite color), so when I want to use it I have someone else pick my fabrics.

juliea9967 06-29-2011 07:01 AM

Yes! Yes! Yes! I didn't realize it until I got organized, but you sure can tell that my favorite color is blue.

Stitchit123 06-29-2011 07:02 AM

Well I had to go look and it looks like my stash is well-rounded .I even have pinks and bright purple my 2 most unfavorite colors but they were bought for 2 quilts for my niece and her DD that I haven't even started -maybe for Christmas if I wear dark glasses

Pat75 06-29-2011 07:02 AM

I found that I have more purple than any other color.Have bought some orange and used it with much difficulty. It is hard to step out side your comfort zone. Shop on.

Kellie G 06-29-2011 07:30 AM

I am a blue buyer!!!! I have 2 drawers full of blues, but little of other colors....I am in the process of making a brown and green quilt for my DH and am having trouble getting enough out of my stash, I have since added some tan fabrics but still searching......

grumpy90650 06-29-2011 07:38 AM

you are not alone...i was sorting my fabrics by colors, and putting them in boxes, when i found out i need way more boxes for my browns, greens and fall fabric.....i told myself i would not buy these colors for awhile, but..OOHHH when i go to the lqs, there is just those colors that i HAVE to have....what can we do!!! And, YES go out and fix the problem, just stay away from the greens and roses and you'll be fine. :D :D

I agree - take a friend to help, though - it makes solving the problem LOTS more fun!

caspharm 06-29-2011 07:47 AM

We all tend to have a favorite color we lean towards. Nothing wrong with it. What's funny though is now that I have gone more with batiks, my color is range has widened except for neutrals. :)

sandy l 06-29-2011 08:05 AM

Right now, it's not so much color with me, as my stash is pretty much spread accross the board. It's polka dots, in any size, shape or color, be it a fq, yd, strips, whatever :!:

Actually I've been thrift shopping (via Craigslist) and gathering diverse colors that way. It's helping me to envision something other than red and white!

Do you buy locally so you can check the fabric? Or, sight unseen? I'm curious. Never thought of checking there.

I've done it a few ways. Once was local and I just picked up the bags/boxes and sorted through it later. That was a haul and a half at $5. I did the same thing with another woman and got a trash bag full of fabric and several books, for $20. At those prices anything I couldn't use for quilting or another project just went to goodwill.

Another time I went to the lady's house and shopped in her closet for $1-$2 per yard, for some excellent quality yardage.

Just see what the deal is, get pics if you can or find out via email what they have. If it's the right deal you can't really go wrong.

huntannette 06-29-2011 08:16 AM

i have to start buying yellows

dcamarote 06-29-2011 08:51 AM

I used to think I was the only one that did that but I found out I am not alone. I think we all migrate towards the colors we like best and I do not worry about it anymore. I tend towards reds, greens, golds, and some inbetweens. I never buy purple; rarely buy blues; very few pinks (except for my grandaughter's quilt ). I figure if I have to wash it; iron it; cut it apart and then sew it back together again, it better be something I like looking at.

valsma 06-29-2011 08:55 AM

Yeah, I have the same problem. I have a pile of blues and pinks and they aren't even my favorite colors. Not sure what I will do with them but will figure it out eventually.
I have told myself that when I buy fabric that is not on sale, i'm going to conciously try and buy colors other than blue or pink. More yellow, black & white, reds, greens.

grannypat7925 06-29-2011 09:19 AM

I think we all have our favorite colors and we just tend to lean towards them. Nothing wrong with that!

hazeljane 06-29-2011 09:26 AM

When I first started quilting, I knew I loved scrappy quilts (still do) but everything I picked looked the same- colors and styles.

This was a long time ago, but I forced myself to buy all the remnants in quilting weight cotton that were under 1 yard when I went to the store. I got some fabrics I thought were hideous, but a little bit in a scrap quilt popped. It forced me to have a variety and it gradually became easier to see the values in "out of my comfort zone" fabrics.

Now my husband will occasionally see something I've bought and gasp, but when it's in the quilt, he likes it.

BarbaraSue 06-29-2011 10:17 AM

I tend to buy greens, and any with leaves on them no matter the color. But I have made quilts of varying colors because I made for someone else's idea.
There is phrase in our quilt guild- "you know who the Patritic colors are and who the earth tones are. We are creatures of habit and sew like colors alot.
I would use your stash as a start to a quilt and push yourself to get another color to go along with your stash that would "pop". this may help you get a feel for other colors you will also use. Just a thought.

me too, Reds and Blues and Blues and Blues, LOL

BrendaK 06-29-2011 01:29 PM

I love white. Then why don't I have more in my stash? It seems that most of the white I have seen is thin and is see through. Is there a certain white that is hard to see through? Does anyone need blue, green? I am trying to get more reds, and browns. After what I have spent on fabric this past two weeks I have to put a halt on buying. Received my Scaredy Cat fabric today and it's so cute. Also received the backing which is the popcorn boxes. BrendaK

I wondered if quilters had more of their favorite colors in their stash. I have wanted to make kids quilts so I have brights in several catagories. Then I wanted to make a patriotic quilt so I got quite a few fabrics in the red, white & blue. I have quite alot of colors because I have bought bundles on e-bay and at estate sales. We will see what I end up making.

SmickChick 06-29-2011 01:50 PM

When I was waiting to pick up my quilt from a recent show, I had "release #147" so I saw quite a few quilts being picked up my their makers. I noticed that the lady with the purple shirt, purple purse and, yes, purple hair (no kidding!) picked up a purple quilt. Then I noticed the red headed lady, and red heads look good in olive, and she was wearing olive, picked up the quilt of koi/goldfish on olive background. I'm a winter, and always gravitate to rose, purple, and jewel tones. I took a class and used others scraps, and ventured out of my comfort zone creating an olive and brown piece. And I look like I died in olive, so I never buy it.
You know that purple hair thing...maybe she didn't know her hair was indeed purple....well I have a cataract, which, doesn't seem to bother me....ha, ha, or does it, and I don't know it??? When my mother had her cataract removed, she exclaimed at how bright everything was.....hummmm.....I'm going to be one of those old ladies not knowing that the red lipstick is scruffing into the 'stache (pronounced: stash) - yes ladies, we all probably have more than just a fabric 'stache...

dellareya 06-29-2011 02:46 PM

I understand what you are saying. When I finally folded all my fabric and organized it, I realized I have a lot more green colors. Never knew I was doing it.

Raggiemom 06-29-2011 02:48 PM

That's funny--those are the two colors I gravitate towards as well!

oldswimmer 06-29-2011 02:51 PM

I think everyone gravitates to certain colors. Lately I have been making a special effort to buy nice nerutrals, as I seem to be very skimpy in that area.

Dollysquiltingmom 06-29-2011 02:51 PM

I do this also. I have plenty of purples and pinks oh and flowers. I need to add other colors and patterns. LOL

perci2 06-29-2011 03:10 PM

I buy a lot of blues and greens- and purples- when i need other colors for a project i almost always have to purchase them :-D
Buying sets of fat quarters will expand your colors-I've even got some crazy colors free as a bonus with purchase that worked well as binding strips so they were not too overpowering

Robinmg 06-29-2011 03:13 PM

I seem to buy a lot of blues and pinks. My favorite color is blue and somehow pink seems to show up a lot. So far I have been able to use them or have plans for them.

charlotte625 06-29-2011 04:40 PM

a friend that I knew had a photo album that fit in her purse and she sniped a peice off every thing she had, and when she used it all up she would discard that peice out of the album............just thought you all might like to know.

Pbecker 06-29-2011 06:53 PM

I just can't pass up orange and green. My best friend, that's you Jo if your following, loves browns. I have to start taking inventory before I go shopping.

QuiltnLady1 06-29-2011 07:20 PM

I have way too much of everything, but the biggest shelves are red/pink, blue, green and teal. Then I have all those pesky Christmas and patriotic and kid fabrics. LOL -- I don't need to buy another yard of fabric. :(
