Does anyone know the answer?

Some time ago I saw an art quilt (can't remember where) which had in part of it what looked liked 'birds nests' on the front of the quilt - does anyone here know how this is achieved, is it a special thread or what? I am handquilting some thistles and thought this might look effective on the flower head

I do russian embroidery (punch-needle)....maybe that would give the effect you are looking for???

You might try searching on the internet for thread painting

You might also try a Pinterest search, lots of great inspiration there.
