And sometimes blocks like these become an UFO because the one who made them can't figure out what to do with them .... which could explain why BettyM found in an estate sale! :)

Do you mean the bottom right corner of the photo? It looks like damage, not an intentional piecing choice (unless that corner is explicitly cut - maybe to piece in a triangle to complete it, then create a square/diamond where 4 of those blocks would come together?)

I'm sorry, the picture is not the best. This is a stack of the blocks, so you are seeing pieces of the blocks that are below this one. The blocks are square, made somewhat scrappy, but mostly the same colors in each block.

You might set them like this. This is made up of just the HST blocks, no alternating blocks.

Thanks, Dunster. This is one layout that I considered. Your diagram makes it easier for me to visualize the quilt.

The centers match up good.... however, the outside doesn't appear to have the needed 1/4" seam allowance. Maybe you can cut them down to a useable size or cut them up and reassemble the useable parts in a scrap version like a disappearing block. Good luck. I would enjoy playing with these.

I believe Betty is asking about the 4 hst's sewn together as a block with the two white triangles on opposite corners. I don't know of any particular name for it, but then, I don't remember much anyway. Just enjoy.

There are a lot of blocks that have the same name -
and there are some blocks that several names -
so that can make things confusing.

It also seems like a new designer may rename an old block. Or someone invented a new block that does not have a formal name yet.

That is exactly what I was asking. Thank you for saying it in a more understandable way! I was hoping to search by the block name to get layout ideas.

At my age, the “so many ideas, so little time” approach would cause me to ditch them. Life gets in the way too often to be burdened by someone else’s colors and settings. But I do understand the urge to rescue the blocks and bring them to a happy ending.

hugs, charlotte

Are they Stretched Stars? Oops, I guess not.

It looks like pieces of Sparkle Plenty , sold by Connecting threads. Just look it up on Google. The quilt is a series of HSTs arranged so there are " pathways " of light and dark echoing a central star...very pretty!
