My grandmother quilted this many years ago. Does anyone know the name of the pattern?

My guess I'd call it a "Rolling Wheel" or "Carpenter's Wheel". Or some variation of Kaleidoscope.

Minus the little circle in the center, this is the same block as in my avatar - kaleidoscope.

sorry, don't know, but it is pretty

It's not a dresden plate because other than that little circle, it's pieced, not appliqued, and there aren't any curves other than the circle. I agree with the pp who said kaleidoscope with the circle added.

At first glance I was sure that it was a Dresden Plate (without the folded ends to create the points), but after looking at it a little more it does look like an "un-kaleidoscoped" kaleidoscope block. For a while I thought kaleidoscopes were a fairly new technique, I've learned differently...it's possible your grandmother could have called it something else though. It kind of looks like a 'buggy wheel' block or whatever that's called too. :) Thanks for sharing!

What fun! I dearly love old quilts and the discussion about the name of this one.

LaurieE 05-28-2011 03:20 PM

It definitely has Wheel in the name. I've seen it EQ.

Sorry, never saw that before

aggiebears 05-28-2011 03:35 PM

Thanks, everyone. I think that it is a Kaleidascope with an added circle.

It's called Happy Hexagons. I started one from a book but have given the book and project to a friend's mother to finish...

I stand corrected..lol..wasn't thinking of the applique part of it..I did find an old one called "Merry-go-Round" and is pieced..still not exact..this is fun..gives me something to do..keeps my brain working..lol..!!

A lot of blocks have multiple names. This looks like a kaleidoscope block to me, and the circles may be added to hide the place where all those points should come together, but seldom do.

That looks just like the old Field of Poppies or Poppy Fields, something like that...

How can it be a Hexagon anything when it has eight sides? lol

I agree with Kaleidoscope with an applique center to hide all the seams meeting in the center! Might not even have a center seam.

Sneaky, but resourceful. :-)
