Our group uses the Black & Decker cordless scissors, found in the hardware section, under$20 & sometimes at Big Lots for $8. They are wonderful, strong, fast, & can cut thru 8 layers, so much better than the electric scissors found in the sewing stores. We do a lot of charity sewing (Dignity gowns & Christmas stockings) & it is so easy & fast to use the Black & Deckers & easy to around curves.

Wow what memories - I remember my mom cussing hers as she was making dresses.

I bought a machine from a friend recently whose wife passed away before we knew him. He gave me lots of extras to go with it, including a pair of electric scissors. I had to play with them and was surprised they cut so well. But it would be hard to control them and get the exact cuts we need for quilting and sewing. While sorting through my stash and cutting pieces of fabric to donate, I used them and they did a good job of just slicing through the fabric pieces. I don't think I'll be using them very often though.

I have my mom's electric scissors too! Really nice ones, I had my own in my 20's and loved them and used them constantly but for the life of me, I can't remember what for! Some really good suggestions here for using them again so I think I'll get them out and see if they still work!
I have some, but haven't used them since I did garment sewing and I hate that so, I guess I won't be using them,.
I can relate - I have four daughters and when they outgrew mom making them dresses, I stopped clothes sewing and have NEVER looked back!! I had the electric scissors, but hated them. |
I have a couple pair of the Black and Decker electric scissors that are rechargable. They do a pretty good job on heavier fabric and at first for cutting minky, but then wanted to jam up in the fabric. They are OK for some things but not precision cutting. They are in the tool dept and were only about $15.

I guessw they are really helpful if making the chenille throws.
cuts thru the three layers of flannell really fast. |

My DH gifted me 35 years ago.....thought I wanted the contraption....don't know what happened to it. I do think my DIL's mother still uses hers. Has anyone seen the new "Man Gadget" electric rotary cutter? Saw a commercial the other evening on TV. I could really screw up with one of those!
Not in a very long time. Use my Ginghers or rotary cutter.
They are great for paper crafts!
I don't find them very accurate for precision cutting but they are great for cutting batting. The trick is to make sure that you only use the blade tips when cutting and not try to use the full length of the blades which gets things pretty jammed up.

I was cleaning out my quilting cabinet and came across a pair of electric scissors that my mother had. Does anyone use electric scissors to cut their fabric with? |
I just found my Mothers they are pink (electric scissors) I don't think she use them she pass away in 2003 and I got all her sewing stuff and I had my stuff that I just got unpack from are move from VA. and I had sewing stuff in NY in our home up here so I am still unpack and coming across things that I forgot I had we were living in Va while husband work for Nasa now he is retire we are now back in our home in NY
I actually still have mine, I think it is stored away some place. Don't use it now, but used it when I made my own clothes. My husband was for any new gadget that would speed the process or make it easier. Thanks for the memory. I had completely forgotten I had it.
I actually still have a pair. I used to used them when I was making cloths, they worked pretty well when cutting out patterns. Not accurate enough for quilting purposes.
The old ones were really awful, but the new ones are great even for precise cutting. In fact, if I want it perfect, I use the electric scissor (no cord).
I still have mine though haven't used them in decades. I liked using the electric scissors for garment sewing. The short cord is a pain but can always use an extension cord.
Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow. |
Yep and they are pink , so in for today ! I use them for sewing garments cutting. You don't push them , that's when they goof up , just go along and they work great ! Maybe try again for projects but I agree not for quilting !
Yes I do use them if I have something real heavy. Works good for that.
I found mine when cleaning out my sewing stuff -- I haven't used them since sewing polyester clothing in the 70's -- so blades are probably dull -- but I did use them then -- maybe again....
I hear that electric scissors are great for cutting the fringe on rag quilts.

I suppose I could put them in the cupboard with all my "evolution of coffee pots" -- drip pots, drip-o-lators, percolators, etc. I just can't seem to part with any of them. |
yep, my new Black and Decker cordless stay plugged in in my sewing room to charged them up. Always ready to use.
no, too much trouble :)
Electric scissors, hmm. I bought a pair for 5.00. They were originally 60.00. Besides fabric, paper, and cardboard they are awesome at opening the plastic packaging. I opened my labeler in just a few seconds. I just zipped right around the edges. It is nice that they are cordless.
I have a pair that I used long ago for fabric cutting but never used them for quilting. They are still on my quilting table.
I have RA and brought my out again, I find them very helpful and I so glad I didn't give them away.

I own a pair that I have had since the 80s. I have to say that I am amazed that they still work. Now, you can not use them for precision cutting, just like you can't use a razor for precision cutting your hair. You also can not force them on the fabric. You have to relax and let them do their thing. When I need it, I am very grateful to have it.
I've had some in the past and used them for clothing but they got dull very quickly. I would very reluctant to use them for cutting out a quilt.
I have a pair too but only used them for cutting clothes patterns. There quit noisy to use.The idea about using them for paper might work. Thanks a lot for the idea.
Just found out we have a friend in Wis.Hes going in for colon cancer in the morning. Please pray for his family and wife. He's name is Randy Martin.I believe in prayer and I know that prayer chains work.God can do the impossible.Thank You |
Sounds like nobody uses these anymore, I likewise. I'm waiting for them to become antiques, then we can display them in our studios. lol
I had the old ones years ago, and used them for cutting upholstery fabrics. I now have a cordless one that is great for cutting yardage, or through several thicknesses of fabric. I would not use them on anything intricate, though.
OMG, I was just talking about electric scissors last week! I had some & used them when I made more clothing. I can't remember whatever happened to them, too many years have gone by. :D
Yes, in fact I have 2 pair. One is very old, but they are still on the market and really come in handy for cutting stuff that does not have to be as perfect as it is for quilting.
