Does this block have a name

1 Attachment(s)
I would like to know the name of this block so I could Google it and find out how to make it. I have tried sawtooth, morning star and every other kind of star I can think of. Thanks so much for your help.

I don't know what the name is, but I drew it in EQ7 as an 8 inch block. Maybe this will help you.

charsuewilson 02-21-2014 06:40 PM

Is it a carpenter's star or carpenter's wheel?

QuiltE 02-21-2014 07:04 PM

It's the centre part of Christmas Star.
The full one has another layer of points similar to what is on that one.

I first made it from an Eleanor Burns book.
You can also find it at QuiltersCache.com

luana 02-21-2014 07:27 PM

Thank you, Barb and QuiltE. I think I can figure it out using half square triangles.

KarenK 02-21-2014 07:30 PM

It's a free pattern on the Moda website called Fresh Flowers Table Runner and Pillow. Type Fresh Flowers in the Search Box

I think I used the same block in a quilt. I couldn't find a name for it either. I think the closest I found was morning star and carpenter's wheel. But it's not exactly like either of those.

Notice that those star points aren't just HALF-square triangles, but are actually (what I call) TRI-square triangles - there are 3 triangles in the one square.

These are easily made by topping an HST with a plain square, drawing your diagonal line across the already sewn diagonal, and sew on each side of the drawn line as you do the HST. When you open, press and trim, you have that tri-square triangle.

It's always interesting to see the original pattern.

Thanks Barb for providing us with the instructions to make this block.

cherisews 02-22-2014 03:16 AM

I think Jan's method of making the star points makes much more sense than the pattern instructions. Much easier her way! Thanks Jan!!

So why when I click in site, I cannot do a search for fresh flowers? Do I have to become a member and register first? Thanks

After posting this link, I realized something very interesting. While traveling last summer, I happened upon a street fair in Oregon, where people were selling quilting fabrics, books & more. One lady had a self made kit with a panel that had 6 of these big flowers on it. I bought the kit for $10 and it included 2 or 3 more fabrics for the TR. Of course, being a quilter, I had to buy it because it was a bargain. Now thanks to all of you, I know what to do with them. AND....my table is 72 inches long. Making a longer table runner will sure be lovely on that table. Now, when can I get several of my 35 UFO's finished so I can start a new project? I have imposed on myself that unless it is for Guild or a VERY special project, I can't start a new project until I clear off 3 of the UFO's. I am really glad I only have 35. My goal is to get 6 of the UFO's completed in 2014. More would be better, but I am a realist. lol

After going to the Houston quilt show and several in Oregon, Washington, Texas, & Arizona, I have so many kits that I don't think I will ever get them done. So many quilting projects, not enough time in my lifetime. Thank goodness, I have a daughter and a granddaughter that are searching through my gi-normous stash every time they come to see what they think they can use. Kits that I am no longer interested in are being passed down every time they come. Isn't it crazy how our tastes in fabrics and patterns change as we progress as quilters?

Thanks to everyone for you help. Jan, you are always so willing to share your skills on this board. It is appreciated. I have always loved this block and think it is ideal for showing of pretty fabric. But, I going back to my original question. Does this block have a name? It should :-)

ManiacQuilter2 02-22-2014 06:01 AM

I search thru my older Blockbase program and was surprised it wasn't there.

I don't know it's name, but, by coincidence, I have made it this week as the center of a medallion quilt that I am working on.

KLO 02-22-2014 12:53 PM

Yes, thanks Barb for that pattern location. It looks like a great block. I was just thinking I should make a star block for the "blocks in space" program that I saw recently on the Quilt Show program. This would work!

I don't know the name but it is pretty/

Sure am having a time understanding this. Is this sometimes called the Boston Block? I know how to make it, but not the way you do. I'll have to try that.
And in the directions for "Fresh Flowers", it took a long time to understand the "bud". It's hard to see in a picture; I think I need a hands on instructor. LOL

You can piece this section by sewing small triangles onto the square and then bigger half-square triangles.
Make the pieces oversized and then trim to size after stitching.

You could also do paper-piecing for this section:

I just realized why the instructions seem so complicated. It's the "bud" on each side that is hard to see, but in 3-D you would be able to see the opening in the bud. It's not just a TRI-square-triangle. You have to prepare the bud first.

Jan's instructions always make more sense! Thanks for posting the picture, luana, and thanks for the instructions. This is just what I need for a panel that I was clueless about what to do with.

If you look in the Tutorials section of this forum, you can find the instructions for making this block (Boston Block). Here is the link http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...rs-t46365.html Although it is a good method and is explained well, I find that this method wastes fabric.
