Does this look alright?

Alright well I found a wonderful pattern online but after looking at how much fabric I had I decided to put it together a little different mixing up the original pattern. I decided to to do a rectangle look on the bottom to add length and will be putting black fabric on the side and top/small strips of black fabric. But I need to know if I went in the right direction and if the quilt looks alright as is before I add black fabric? BTW, it is for my cousin's daughter for graduation.

Love you quilt. I would use a strip of the blue, then add the black, it will break up all the black in the quilt. Or you can use a strip of the Green too. Mary

I think it would look more balanced if half the checkerboard was on top and half on the bottom. I see it is 7 rows--so make one more row and put 4 on top and 4 on the bottom. Maybe just me, but I like a symmetrical look usually. Otherwise, a very nice quilt.

I love that fabric!! I would also add a strip of blue and then the black border. It is a really neat quilt!!

I agree with sprice. I like things balanced with equal strips on the top and the bottom.

I also agree with sprice. I love the checkerboard effort! It would be lovely to use that same arrangement as a border, all around.

I agree. For the most part the human brain prefers symmetry. Some asymmetrical designs are spectacular and I really like them but the very graphic nature of this design seems to call for symmetry. If you don't want to make another row, you can put 3 on top and leave 4 on the bottom.

I too would change the checkerboard to 3 top/3 bottom. Also I see that the final row of checkerboard looks like it is misaligned, as the black squares line up with the row above, rather than being staggered.

Ditto, it's not just you sprice.

I like it just the way it is and with your thoughts on the finishing. It has that modern quilt look that I love. And so do many of the younger folks these days. You did a great job. Would you share the pattern that was your inspiration? I'd like to see how you mixed it up and came up with your version.

Momala24 02-27-2015 02:18 AM

I would put and uneven number of strips along the top, but fewer than the number of strips across the bottom. That would set off the design but still give you a modern look. Love your quilt. You've done a great job!

I agree with top and bottom checkerboard.

oklahomamom2 02-27-2015 05:25 AM

I think I will put 3 on top and more at the bottom then put the black around it then.

I liked the quilt as it was except that last row does seem to be misaligned. Checkerboard top and bottom will look good too.

Thank you so much for pointing that out I have working really hard on this quilt and very late at night so for that to happen is understatement. I think I will put 3 on top or 4 and same on bottom.

Love the quilt but I also agree with sprice, quilt will be more balanced/ centered. You then could add the green, black or blue borders or all three in different dimensions.

MargeD 02-27-2015 09:49 AM

It's a beautiful quilt, however, I think I would take 3 rows of the checkerboard and put it on the top of the quilt. It's your choice of course, but I prefer a more balanced look, but I like the way you added length to the quilt, I would just balance it a little more.

maryellen2u 02-27-2015 05:44 PM

Yes the bottom row needs to be shifted one block over either to the right or left. Then add a small border of green and a small border of blue and then add your black border. I am comfortable with the checker board just on the bottom. It's fine to me. Is this just going to be a throw or do you need a pillow tuck at the top? If you need a pillow tuck at the top then I might rethink the layout. I think it is a great quilt. Sort of unexpected!

Can you put the year of her graduation in the square
Or her picture and year or appliqué, just looks like it
Needs something, I love the bottom and the colors!

I, too, would put the checkerboard effect all around. Two rows at the sides would suffice, maybe three, if that won't make the quilt way too large!

LOVE that fabric, Cute quilt !!

I agree- I think I would do the same, as it looks off lance to me also. However you do it I'm sure the recipient will love it!

oklahomamom2 02-28-2015 10:30 AM

I'n not able to because I'm not sure what day just the year but I don't know how to do that.

IBQUILTIN 02-28-2015 12:37 PM

I agree with the other posts. I would split the extra strips, and add half at the top. I think it feels like something missing if you don't. Then add your blue border and whatever else you want. Just a thought

looks great to me
