Does this work?

2 Attachment(s)
I am working on using up fabrics that I have instead of purchasing new. I am making a little girl quilt for a lady at work and I am happy with the tumbler pattern. I have this pink satin from an old project that I am thinking about making a ruffle for the quilt - but I am not sure if its the right color pink

what do you guys think? does this pink satin work with the quilt - or is it too bold? I can't decide

sewred 06-16-2018 06:01 PM

I think that would be adorable!

Grace creates 06-16-2018 06:15 PM

I'm liking it for a little girl

Tartan 06-16-2018 06:33 PM

In my opinion the satin overpowers the top. It's a cute top!

SillySusan 06-16-2018 06:34 PM

Fantastic! The little girl will love it!

dunster 06-16-2018 06:42 PM

If it were for an adult it might be too bright, but what little girl wouldn't love the sparkly fabric and pink satin?

PamelaOry 06-16-2018 06:51 PM

I agree with dubstep, I do think it overpowers the top and I also think a little girl won’t care one bit.

Stitchnripper 06-16-2018 07:59 PM

I think a little girl would love that shiny soft satin.

meyert 06-17-2018 05:10 AM

thanks everyone...I agree with what everyone says :)

SusieQOH 06-17-2018 05:12 AM

I don't think it really "works" but if I were a little girl it would!

bearisgray 06-17-2018 05:46 AM

I think the pink mutes/drabs down the colors of the top -

I think most little kids love the texture of satin. My grandsons dragged around some ivory satin for a couple of years.

I am ambivalent about using that pink satin with that top.

What are you thinking about for using for the backing?

sewbizgirl 06-17-2018 05:49 AM

Not liking the shiny satin around that quilt... but then I'm not 7 years old, either! I think the blocks have enough sparkle on their own. Also, satin is a notorious frayer. If you decide to use it, make bigger seams... like 1/2".

nativetexan 06-17-2018 05:58 AM

it is just bold enough. it is so cute!!!

KalamaQuilts 06-17-2018 06:03 AM

blankets used to always have satin top and bottom. As a thumb sucker, I can attest to their comfort

Onebyone 06-17-2018 07:06 AM

Any little princess will love it.

Sharle 06-17-2018 08:06 AM

I think it is precious for a little girl, so sweet!!

Boston1954 06-17-2018 08:09 AM

I think it's great.

Jordan 06-17-2018 08:31 AM

It is a bright pink but I think a little girl would love it. Your quilt is adorable

Barb in Louisiana 06-17-2018 09:41 AM

I like it. The satin border plays nicely with the ballerina skirt.

jokir44 06-17-2018 10:13 AM

The little girl would love it for the bright color and soft texture. I would hesitate to use it though because I would worry about the durability.

Kids do like the feel of satin between their fingers. I'm wondering if you use a 1/2" seam allowance, thus making the binding thinner, it would not make quite so much of a bold statement.

bearisgray 06-17-2018 12:38 PM

A "key" question:

Is the satin washable? Some wash up beautifully - some don't.

meyert 06-17-2018 01:12 PM

yes this satin is washable and has been washed

I am putting pink flannel on the back

I too was playing around with making it a smaller ruffle - like only 1" (instead of the 2-1/2" that shows and what I usually do)

Jingle 06-17-2018 04:04 PM

It will be perfect for a little girl.

bearisgray 06-17-2018 04:07 PM

The more I look at it, the more appealing it is.

Why not go for the bigger ruffle? (On every blanket I've had, the satin binding has always worn out first - maybe add some sort of "buffer" - so that if and/or when the satin might wear out, the quilt will still be okay?)

Rhonda Lee 06-17-2018 05:20 PM

Its cute but I think the satin overpowers the darling quilt. Do you have any other pink fabric to choose from?

My thoughts also. Lighter pink would be much better

quilting cat 06-17-2018 07:03 PM

It looks like the pink matches part of the dancer's costume. Go for it! And congratulations on working at using what is already on hand -- that is SOO...hard to do!

zozee 06-17-2018 07:52 PM

I'm in the same camp with everyone who feel the bright pink doesn't quite match perfectly but is perfect for a little girl. My nephew used to call his a "silky blankie". The feel of satin is very soothing. Ideally a lighter pink would "go" better, but there's a lot to be said for using what you have. Girls who love pink (which is most of them) love all shades of pink, in my experience.

that was my first thought too...I think it will be wonderful.

quilterpurpledog 06-18-2018 02:28 AM

This binding, even though pretty and bright will not wear or wash well. It will also lose its body with the first wash. I would make a more durable choice-especially for a child.

Karamarie 06-18-2018 04:45 AM

I think it looks fine for a girl.

mengler 06-18-2018 05:06 AM

Doesn’t really enhance the top. Maybe teal or even white

Wanabee Quiltin 06-18-2018 05:43 AM

I guess I’m confused: is this for a woman or a little girl? If it’s for a little girl, then, yes I think she will like it. For a woman, No.

lillybeck 06-18-2018 06:03 AM

I think this is perfect

JanieH 06-18-2018 09:30 AM

I love the satin! I also like the idea of the pink flannel on the back. I recently saw a picture of a little girl's bedroom that was painted pink - the walls, doors, woodwork, and ceiling; had pink rug and pink curtains and, of course, pink quilt on the bed. All the furniture and accessories were, you guessed it, pink. The mother said her daughter said it was like living inside a pink bubble. Mom said she would be glad when her daughter would be ready to repaint but was happy with it because her daughter loved it. So go with the pink ruffle and let her have fun!

red-warrior 06-18-2018 10:34 AM

Great job fussy cutting your tumblers!!!!

meyert 06-18-2018 02:51 PM

thanks everyone... this will be a little girl. The granddaughter of someone that I work with. I agree a different color would be better.. but I'm not going to spend any money :)
