Seems like she would have only had one shipping fee for how many ever books were ordered for the class.

My LQS gives discounts of up to 20% to class attendees. As for charging for shipping, that does not seem right to me, plus if they have ordered a quanity, they got discounted shipping anyway. They should just say the book will cost $X. and you need it to take the class. Why show shipping? What happens if you buy the book somewhere else? Often, if we already have the pattern, we can use ours instead of buying it again.

Even when I special order something from my lqs I am NOT charged for shipping. You got ripped off and if there is another lqs you can shop at I certainly would.

Even when I place a special order I have NOT been charged for shipping. If there is another LQS in your area I would shop there, she is taking advantage of you and ripping you off so she can make a few extra $$$. How can she charge sales tax when your state doesn't have sales tax?

I am afraid I would not take another class from this shop. My LQS gives a discount when purchasing class supplies from them.

I have never heard of such an idiotic thing before in my life. That's a RIPoff. My LQS doesn't do that either, and you get a 10% or 20% discount off of any supplies that you purchase at their store for the class. (I think the discount is 10% off). Sorry that you got taken.

Having worked at 2 different quilt shops, the shop buys the book wholesale (50% of listed price). Not sure about shipping costs. So you shouldn't have been charged for shipping because the shop should cover the shipping cost as the cost of business or they may not even get charged shipping (the distributor may cover that cost).

Either way, it was poor taste of the teacher to charge you shipping. The only reason I can think is that doing that is that the source of the book doesn't do wholesale! If that is the case, I would offer my students to buy the book from me or look online for a cheaper alternative. (And if you know me, I would be finding my students the cheapest way to purchase the book). Quilting is expensive and I want my students knowing that I'm trying to find them the best deal I can. It builds respect between teacher and student. :)

Actually, the instructor was most likely correct in charging you sales tax. If her business is from a state that has sales tax, and her banking institution where she processes her sales and credit card charges is also in that state, she is by law required to charge sales tax, even if she's physically in another state.

I believe that stores of any variety will continue to do things the customers find questionable until someone (or more) complains about it. Before creating too much of a ruckus, you might ask the owner of the LQS about the extra charge. I remember taking a class one time and the students all needed a special variegated thread for the class - which we purchased at the LQS. The owner mis-read the invoice for the thread and charged us each the box price for the thread instead of the individual price. When it was pointed out to her the thread was VERY expensive, she found the error, admitted the mistake and gave each of us a store credit for the overcharge. Problem solved. To my knowledge, this did not happen again. I believe it was an honest mistake.

I'd be tempted to ask that only books available for purchase IN the store be used for classes.
