domestic, mid-arm, long arm, etc. question
 

I know what a domestic machine is, but I don't understand what is the difference between the mid-arms and long-arms. Is it the length of the throat? I see people talking about them but don't understand.

I have a Baily Pro 15" and don't use it with a frame, but as I would a domestic machine with the feed dogs down. So what is mine?

Yes, the terms refer to the throat length. It's not cast in concrete, but a long arm is usually 18" or longer, a mid arm is 9 to 17 (I've also heard 11 - 17) and anything under 9 (or 11 :)) is a domestic machine. Normally long arms are on frames, mid arms and domesics can be on a frame or sit down. I would call yours a mid-arm sit down. I would also call it a wonderful set up!

Since I got my 17" Bailey I think everything larger than DSM is a long arm. But we get spoiled very fast, and when I see a 24" machine I just sigh and say: one day, when kids are out of school, the house is paid off, the cars are paid off I will get one of these. Until then my mid arm Bailey is going to be a long arm -1". LOL
