Check with the Old Age Homes in your area. The residents there are always needing lap quilts or blankets to use during the winter time. You can also make quilts for single beds for them.

I do the QFK program and always send one kit back and one quilt of my own fabric/design with it.

I have in time belonged to 2 organizations that I crochet and quilt for but I have found I can stay plenty busy just making things for folks I meeet locally. i sew and quilt for my church nursery and I am contacted any time some of my church family hears of a need. I believe in giving where I live first and then branch out. I love the fact that I have quilts hugging little children whom I have never seen. I make a practice to pray over what i make because prayer can go anywhere Jesus can go and do anything Jesus can do!!!

I've done a few for disaster relief efforts but the majority of my donations are for a local charity that makes sports quilts themed around local professional sports teams (Boston) and they are donated to children's hospitals, etc. I started doing it in September, 2009 and have donated 15 so far and going strong. If any of you fellow Bostonian's are interested, check out the charity's website at www.wrappedupinsports.org. We can always use more volunteers!

i make quilts with my small guild (9 ladies), we give kids quilts to a homeless shelter plus we make a quilt for any families in our area that have had a house fire. On my own i do the downy quilts and any thing else that appeals to me. I currently am trying to finish some polyester quilts i started years ago and will give them to a homeless shelter in a big town near me.

Our quilt group made 115+ quilts for a Kenyan orphanage our church helped to build and maintain. We also sew for children in foster care, nursing home patients and premie babies at our local children's hospital. So many good opportunities, so little time!

Granny B 06-30-2010 04:06 PM

Made 45 bed quilts for the homeless shelter last year and always make quilts for the veterans hospital. My daughter and I took 16 quilts down in May and are working on a batch for the end of July. It's an ongoing thing. Also make quilts for the babies at the unwed mother's home.

All my charity quilts currently go to Quilts For Kids. I do not belong to any group. I do them all on my own. They vary in size, but linger around lap size and they vary in complexity depending on my mood. I do it all for fun as I enjoy the piecing, quilting and ultimatly donating process. I learn something new with each quilt I make and it makes me feel good to know it's going to someone who needs it and will love it.

For those of you that quilt for wounded soldiers BLESS YOU! My son is in Afghanistan now and I would want him to be comforted if anything were to happen! What a wonderful group of people I have found on the web!

I have donated to the Linus Society, The Baptist Children's Home, several for churches & my genealogy society to raffle, Nazarene Church for the children in Haiti, families sponsored by the Methodist Church on the Gulf Coast after Katrina, & pet beds for the local humane society--- The quilts that went to Haiti were very colorful and just a couple of basic patterns. I always try to make quilts appropriate for where they are going. When I did the quilts for the Baptist Children's Home, I embroderied the names of the children on the quilts. I got the sweetest notes from those children.

I donate small quilts to a local crisis nursery - through my guild. Our guild also donates quilts to Camp Good Times - a camp for children in remission from cancer. Last year the camp received smaller quilts suitable for younger children but was lacking quilts for pre-teens and teens. I did two quilts for the camp; one was twin and the other was double. Also, just yesterday I submitted a request for a Downy kit after seeing an ad in a new quilt magazine AND reading about the Downy kits on this site. I really love to do the charity quilts - it is a great way to try a lot of new and simple quilt patterns; cut down on my stash; and practice my FQM.

I have made and donated quilts for Lutheran World Relief, Wounded Soldiers, Relay for Life, Work and School fundraisers, Pillowcases and Christmas Stockings for the Soldiers overseas. I have only kept my two challenge pieces from our guild. Everything else I have given away to friends, neighbors, family.

Hi, I mainly do quilts for my local hospital's NICU. My 20 month old grandson (preemie) spent 3 weeks there after birth. This unit has the most wonderful staff. So I considerate it paying back for his wonderful treatment.

I make War Time Quilts for wounded British Soldiers as part of the Quilts Of Valour UK.

edit, (pressed the button too soon) :-D

I've made most of the QOV in Red, White and Blue as this seems to be the more popular colour, although I gone to the nature fabrics a few times too. They usually are approx 54x66inches... many have been a bit larger.

Once the quilt and pillowcase is finished with the Recipients name and some personal details on the label, I post them to Jean in Wales who personally delivers them to the injured Hero or whichever Regiment/hospital the are to go.

doglover 07-06-2010 08:44 PM

During the past year I have donated almost 80 quilts and throws to Project Linus, a local church and various charities for raffles. Anyone know where I can get material donations? Seriously

Hi Judy, I know there must be many groups that are doing Soldier quilts, but the Quilts of Valour here in the UK is a part of the QoV group that began and is still going strong in the States.

Google Quilts Of Valor ... sorry, I think it's .org

Everything you need to know, you'll find their website full of information, where to send them to, tips and links to patterns, Recipients photos and letters, and what to do about your labels.

From what I've read on the main site, there are many more groups that may be near you that you can use as a drop off point, or you may be able to locate a longarmer that will donate their time for you Soldier's Quilt of Valour.

Hope this is of some help

One way to get material is to ask your friends and neighbors for any cotton blouse, skirt slacks or their husbands shirts, colored and white, bedsheets that you may be tired of using, anything that is cotton. This is one suggestion. Sometimes you can get material in bags at garage sales also. You may have to pay a small fee, but you would get some different pieces of material. Try it.

I make baby quilts, though not all are baby colors, or patterns. I do this for the pregnancy center here in our small mountain town, but I also do them as a way of healing of my own hard life ( abortion as a teen, and miscarriages as a married woman ).. I began making them after hearing about the center here, and knowing that it gets very cold, and snowy here in the winter, I began doing a few each month, but the need seems to be growing all year long, so I am trying to make at least one a week when my health allows.. A great healing, and blessing for me, but even more, a way of leaving my imprint on the lives of each little one that receieves a quilt instead of being aborted.. this is all worth the tears I am learning to cry now..

Just last week I saw a re-run of Sewing with Nancy, and her guest was the founder of the Camo Quilts Projects. I sent for a free kit (postage had to be re-imbursed), and I got it within 3 days. email addy http://www.camoquiltproject.blogspot.com/ We have a good friend who is in Afghanistan right now, and I want to send this to him to let him know that we're praying for him. I hope to be back to quilting soon....I just had shoulder surgery last Friday, physical therapy starts today.

I make lap quilts for the Wounded at Hines Veterans Hospital, Hines, Illinois. So far, since 2007, I've made over 200. I seldom see the person/persons that get them, but occasionally someone I know will tell me they got one of my little quilts. You see, no supposed to, but I sneak my first name and the date into a piece of the front pattern.

I prefer to keep my donations at the local level. I used to work for the state's Child Protective Services department and I donated baby and toddler quilts to babies in foster care and families who were unable to buy baby items. Now that I work for the department that serves needy families by providing food and cash assistance, I'm contemplating doing the same, but there's a tremendous need. I may have to stick with sending my quilts to my old colleagues who make sure they give them to the neediest of families.

Thank you for mentioning this --with the increase in wounded there is always a need for the denim quilts - called the 4 Freedom Quilts- yes, materials are supplied for theis category....

I make, and donate small quilts to our local ( and small ) pregnancy center.. its a way to give of my heart, to those babies who are being adopted out , when I know the pain of losing a child .. Each one is scrappy in design, but created in purpose.. I recieve MUCH healing with each tear that falls on each small quilt as I say a short blessing over it before I had it off to the center .. Its not much to offer these babies, but it is MUCH to receive back the healing of my past choices..

So how do I contact this group!! I would love to give back!

I quilt with a group and we quilt for Pregnancy Lifeline Fort Worth. We make baby quilts and the moms that choose to not abort their babies get to pick a handmade quilt for the baby. Last year our group made/gave so many quilts that the women who were "on the fence" with the big decision were able to receive a quilt before deciding. About 87% of those women chose life! We hold fundraisers to purchase fabric and our group has a "group stash" from which we can pick to make our quilts. We don't have a size requirement and we can use whatever patterns we want...

Your project sounds like it is wonderfully worth-while. What a blessing to be part of a ministry like that!

I don't deal with outside organizations. I chose my charities directly-------someone or some group I know personally. I do support two autism groups, one in Indiana and one in Virginia. Also a private foundation who is affiliated with "First Candle."

I do QFK from my own stash and help with fundraising. Our Ann Arbor chapter donates to Mott's Children's Hospital and the Monroe Advocacy Center.
