Door hanger?
I have a friend who just moved into an assisted living facility. I would like to make a Spring wallhanging for her door. What's the best way to hang it? I'm thinking a suction cup, but what do I use to hang it? Is 24 inches square too big? I imagine the doors are wider to allow for easy access.

I use a wreath hanger over my doors to hang things.

They have the door hangers now that are special for sticking to walls. I found a pic for you. They do have these at Walmarts and other stores. Our hardware store has them too. I haven't used them, but see them all over the place. They claim not to ruin the surface it is stuck to.

in the home where my aunt lives, the handyman there hung it for her. not sure what he used, i haven't been there yet

The Command strips that hperttula mentioned can be purchased at JoAnns using your 40 or 50% off coupons. I buy them there when I don't need the coupon for anything else.

I would check with whatever facility your friend is in. Different rules abide as to size and placement.
One facility I knew wouldn't allow anything much outside the door. All had to be inside the room. Not my favorite place. ali |
My mom is in a local nursing home. I use the curtain ring clips to put on top of hanging and run a dowel thru them. Then, I hang the dowel on the wreath hanger over the door. I've been trying to make seasonal hangings, so I can use the clips for each new hanging. I'm sure each facility has their own rules, too, so better check. My mom loves having a one-of-a-kind hanging on her door. I know your friend will, too.

What about 3-M's COMMAND hangers? We used them when decorating for Christmas in our church hall. Worked very well, including on concrete block walls.
Of course, it would require a rod and ties ON the hanging. |
Simple and cheap - thumb tack stuck in very TOP of door. It doesn't interfere with closure and holds fishline - yarn - fabric, etc etc from dowling thru a sleeve of a hanging.

My question was on the machanics of keeping the hanging straight. Maybe a dowel wirh some decorative ends. I'm sure these are steel fire doors so any number of things would work to attach it to the door. I will let maintenance deal with that. Out of the room decorations are allowed. I walked her in yesterday and saw many. Glittery St Patricks's Day and a lot of tired looking Christmas which surprised me in a nicely decorated new facility. Neither of those would suit my friend or me.

If it is a metal door, they make great magnetic wreath hangers now. My son bought me one for Christmas that is very strong. It has a hook on it for the wreath and I just center my wooden dowel on it. For an apartment door, hang it high enough that it won't get knocked off from people with walkers brushing against it. As for hanging it straight, I would put the dowel/rod in the top for a straight edge. I would then attach a cord at the ends of the rod. I would tie a little loop in the middle of the string/cord for the hanger. This should keep it straight and secure. You might also think about making one wallhanging backboard for several button on seasonal greetings.

When I make ones for assisted livings or nursing homes, I put 2 half square triangles sewn into the top two corners of the back. On each HST I sew a piece of the soft side of velcro. Then, I take 2 of the 3M Command Strips (not the hooks) and attach a piece of the sticky back velcro that is the opposite end. Put the Command Strips on the door and velcro the wall hanging to it. It will always stay steaight, and by having the HSTs on the back, you can later use a dowel rod to hang it elsewhere.
