I was at the second hand store today and found four quilting patterns. These were free with the Mountain Mist Fillings for quilts. They date back to the 30"s.I got NY beauty dated 1930, Martha's Vineyard, The Double Wedding Ring 1931, & Pieced Squares-1932. I would say overall for age there in near mint condition. There one very large sheet.

Awesome!

Eleanor Burns shows those kinds of things on her show often. She collects old patterns from batting. Some of them are very neat.

buddy'smom 05-18-2011 08:56 AM

Well I don't go back that far either haha, but the patterns are awesome.

greensleeves 05-18-2011 09:40 AM

You found a treasure. A lot of people are now looking for and collecting the old freebees that came with batting and in newspapers, etc. Not only collecting them but making them into quilts. I for one love the old traditional patterns.

eastermarie 05-18-2011 10:03 AM

I have heard about them but never seen one. It was a nice idea of the company.

What a great find!

JCquilts 05-18-2011 10:23 AM

I have a collection of these patterns. I am just a couple shy of having all of them.

Stearns and Foster is selling reprints of all of them for about $4 each.

mine are all originals...somehow I like them better...even though there really is no difference in the pattern..

Isnt it fun to find them? Congrats to you

sewgull 05-18-2011 10:46 AM

Show picture. Those old patterns are always so interesting.

I think they disappeared around the same time , the hand towel in the laundry soap disappeared.

I actually remember those patterns from when I started quilting ... but it wasn't as far back as the 30's as my folks hadn't even met and I wasn't even a twinkle til much later.

One of my quilt guilds had a program from Mountain Mist and it was awesome. I highly recommend having them if you can.

I remember those to, I would love to see them if possible. I haven't seen any of these in a really long time. Wish they would do them again.

lillybeck 05-19-2011 04:27 AM

I have one laid out right now that I am considering. I made it once doing everything by hand while I was riding with my hubby for a week once. These are great patterns.

Yooper32 05-19-2011 04:35 AM

The pieced squares is my year. (sigh)

Mornigstar 05-19-2011 04:39 AM

Could you possibly take a photo of them ?-maybe layed out on table fairly close up so we all can see. I wouldn't know what they are if I did see some. I am working with a 1959
Mc Call pattern now but it was NOT free.

jamsbuying 05-19-2011 05:47 AM

Great find!!! I have several of my grandmother's quilt patterns from newspapers and Mtn. Mist. I need to dig them out and have a look at exactly what I do have.

mouseface 05-19-2011 06:05 AM

what a find neat

luvstoquilt 05-19-2011 06:20 AM

Oh! Now I am green with envy. That is my favorite quilting era. Enjoy them and show us the results when you make them!

acjacques 05-19-2011 06:27 AM

I have a collection of Aunt Martha's old/traditional quilt patterns. I refer to them all the time.

scraphq 05-19-2011 07:12 AM

I made 2 applique quilts using Patterns from Mountain Mist batts. (Yes, I am Old!) Have 2 sets of the Aunt Martha booklets and have made some of those quilts, too. Love the old stuff to this day.

<Well I don't go back that far either haha, but the

I remember seeing them printed on the bags about 15 years ago. Don't remember them printed on paper. They might have had the pix on the bag and the paper instructions inside. I do recall contacting the company for one the store had sold out of and they snail mailed it to me.

Well just from memory, there were around 130 different patterns dating from about 1929 into the 1960s. I have a copy of a complete listing in my historical pattern collection. Ill try to locate it and give you more information. All of the patterns were not quilt patterns, some were quilting designs.

All patterns were not available in the batting, some were mail ordered using a coupon that was printed on the freeby.

I looked online as I found them all still available a couple of years ago. Now I see them exclusively sold by one web site and they dont have them all. They also have a new book out about the patterns and it includes some of the designs.

If you are a serious collector, PM me and Ill email you a digital copy of the index of patterns.

PolkaBabe 05-19-2011 12:24 PM

Yes I remember well, this is what my mother used. I did get all mom's sewing/craft stuff. Yesterday I ran across & crib size quilt I made in grade school. Boy is it worn all over, I would say beyond repair. Blocks are of kittens done with liquid embrodery.

MaggieMeg 05-19-2011 01:34 PM

I'd love to see the pictures on them!

DonnaB 05-20-2011 09:12 PM

Have never heard of them, I am missing out again.
