TN Donna 12-05-2010 08:04 PM

My son and daughter-in-law came down today and brought my sewing machine. It was supposed to be a Singer. I had a little party for my husband as his birthday is Wednesday and the kids work and go to school, etc. on Wednesday. My daughter did not even come because her town 30 minutes up the road had a dusting of snow (that was her excuse). My son watched the Cowboy/Colts game and the kids went into the other bedroom to watch a movie. After they left I looked at the machine. It IS NOT a singer, it is a Kenmore. It has been in storage for 17 years and the thread and belt are dry rotted. I oiled it and cleaned it up. I will have to order a book because I don't understand all the dials on it.

I then went into the other bedroom to get my pins I left in there yesterday and all the cover was torn off the bed and every movie in the cases were in the floor. I was so disappointed I cried. I am not able tonight to pick them up so I just shut the door.

I feel your disappointment. Been there, done that. I hope tomorrow is brighter.

Maggiesmom 12-05-2010 08:09 PM

So sorry sounds like a bummer. Sometimes things are just more than we can bear. At least for this day. Stop, fix a cup of tea, take a deep breath say a prayer and know that tomorrow will be better. Know also that our hearts and prayers are also with you. This is how I have learned to get through some hard days. Bless you.

Izaquilter 12-05-2010 08:10 PM

I look so forward to company coming but I also look forward to them leaving! Only to be left with the mess that you spoke about. Next time you will have to ask them if they've picked everything up that they got out. If they can't do it then the parents should help. I'm soooo sorry.

rob529 12-05-2010 09:05 PM

I find that a really good hard cry can be very healing sometimes. I hear there is actually medical basis to this.

sewgull 12-05-2010 09:05 PM

Hope tomorrw is a better day. Hugs to you.

"you are in Grandma's house---Grandma's Rules !!!"
those kids need to respect your space. sorry this has happened to you. it's why we have good friends, they respect us & take care of us.

cjomomma 12-05-2010 09:18 PM

Next year just take hubby out for a nice dinner. Avoid the stress especially if no one is gonna help celebrate.

Quiltforme 12-05-2010 09:41 PM

Sometimes these are diamonds in the rough take a break tonight and start fresh tomorrow. Sorry the kids made such a mess I wish I was there to help clean it up does it help if I send (((hugs))) Take care! Jade

Forget the tea. Make a couple of jolly ranchers. You'll really feel a lot better! LOL

Jolly rancher is a hard fruit flavored candy that you suck because it's too hard to chew. But it's so yummy! I don't know how to make them though.

deema 12-06-2010 04:56 AM

You know, that is something that really bothers me...I always check in on my kids where they are playing and make sure they clean up their mess. I would be very disappointed if my daughter didn't learn from that and enforce it with her own children in the future. I hope today is a better day for you.

Apparently, a Jolly rancher is also a shot! Not my cup of tea (I'm not a vodka drinker) but I can see how that line of thought might be more appealing than tea! lol

cjomomma 12-06-2010 05:01 AM

I was thinking it was something else too but my mind went blank. I'm not a drinker so I didn't know. Thank you!

Hope today will be a better day for you.Ages weren't mentioned, but most parents know kids go thru a spell when they're all for themselves. The day will come when they're grown up & much nicer to be around.

CarrieAnne 12-06-2010 05:30 AM

Aw, sounds like a bad day! Sending hugs!@

Tinabodina 12-06-2010 05:46 AM

I was taught as a child and it still sticks with me today. If someone is kind enough to give you a place to visit or stay, leave it better than you found it. I can only hope this message will be taught for generations to come, but so far I too am not seeing that in the upcoming generation.

clem55 12-06-2010 05:49 AM

When my son brings the little ones to visit, they want to get out everything to play. It is like they want to be sure to get it all in before they have to go home again. They can make a mess so fast! But when it is time to leave, he tells them to pick up, and then he will go around and check, and whatever has been overlooked, he puts it away. He does that everytime, if it is summer and they have bikes and sandbox toys out, they are picked up and he always puts the bikes back into the garage.. When my kids were little, they played with one thing at a time , and before they went on to something else, that toy was put up. We don't do that with the grandkids, they are here so seldom we don't want to be on their case all the time. Difference between your children and grands!LOL

sewingsuz 12-09-2010 05:49 PM

I'll tell you Donna, there has been many times I have said to myself and HB."If I had it to do over, I would have not have any kids and I also said I should have given them up for adoption. I won't go into details, however it has been more disappointing then rewards. I look at some chidren that are grown and with the familys and I get jealous. Sincerely suz

grannyp70 12-09-2010 06:03 PM

Hi There, Just read your post, girlfriend I know just how you feel. My Mom use to tell me that when your kids are little they walk on your toes and when they are grown they walk on your heart, I never knew what she ment until I had kids of my own, and lord a mercy do I ever know what she ment now. So when your grandchildren come again you make sure that they pick up everything that they took out or they don't take it out. I learned that the hard way with mine,, but now if they take something out they put it back before they leave or the parents do, I refuse to pick up after them anymore, I am to old and delapadated to do that anymore, so you hang in the girl and tomorrow will be a much better day. Sending you a great big HUG.

Funny that you should mention Jolly Ranchers. Our Dollar Tree store has them and I've been keeping a bag near my sewing machine for an occasional treat!

My children were told to always pick up whatever they got out to play with and they did that most of the time but now the grandchildren are a different story. They are always making a mess and leaving it. I told my husband I was going to quit letting them have anything. One grandson lived with us a few weeks and he didn't leave anything out I could see. When he left I was giving my living room a good cleaning and found 7 sandwiches in my end table drawer. They were molded. He had moved several miles away by then so I called him and asked about them. He said they were an experiment. Now I always check everything when they leave.

debbieumphress 12-09-2010 06:53 PM

It's all in the training. When my three little gks come over and finish playing, the toys go back in the box or they disappear the next time. Easy. Girls cleaned their rooms or clothes etc disappeared for a week or so. Easy peasy. LOL.

Laura22 12-09-2010 07:00 PM

Sounds like a bad day, hope things improve. I know the feeling of messes and being unappreciated, but I know them from a mom of young kids standpoint still right now.

sewingsuz 12-09-2010 08:04 PM

Things disappear around here also if they are laying around and grandson does not put them away. I put them up and some times he does not miss whatever it is. He is 12 and lives with grandma (me) and HB. He is pretty good and I have taught him to keep his room clean and neat. I am now teaching him to do his laundry. He also cleans up after his dog in the yard and cleans the kitchen after snacks. It took Two yrs to teach him these things. It is a constant thing to keep this up day after day. It will be worth it to see him be a fine young man.

Melinda in Tulsa 12-09-2010 11:28 PM

I totally understand how you feel. When my youngest daughter (almost 30) comes over with the DGK's, she's as bad as they are about not putting stuff up. It is to the point, I dread them coming over. And she was taught better. {{{HUGS}}}

And eat some chocolate, it's good for the soul!

raedar63 12-10-2010 01:36 AM

Hey, I had lost the book for my old kenmore . I got online and was able to download one for free. I do not remember the site but search before shucking out 10-15 bucks!

sewingladydi 12-10-2010 06:04 PM

I've got a 30 year old Kenmore and it's much better than the Singer I had. I still use it to piece. Give it a try-you might like it if it can be fixed.

cathyvv 12-10-2010 06:17 PM

I've got an old Montgomery Ward machine - about 40 years - that was in storage for most of that time. I suspect that once you get a new belt on the Kenmore, you will be happy with it. Mine "started right up' - after I charged MY batteries!
