Personally, I have no use for double knit in quilts. HOWEVER, I would never refuse a fabric gift from anyone. I'd be afraid that if I refused, the friend would think twice about offering the next time (and the "next time" might be a boatload of 100% cotton). There are many things you could do with this fabric, if you choose not to use it yourself: pass it on to someone that does use double knit; to a church group or local guild that make quilts for Vets, Children's Hospitals and nursing homes.

I have used this for quilts before but I would not mix it with any other fabric. My sister has a quilt her MIL made her over 30 years ago and it still looks new.

May mother in-law used double knit all the time. Made wonderful warm Quilts. They ware like iron. Wash very well.

I have a double-knit quilt made by my MIL about 40 years ago; it has a sheet for the backing. I thought both of those ideas were no-no's but my quilt has lasted for 40 years thru 1 child, 15 dogs, and one hubby who uses the quilt every night while he falls asleep on the floor watching TV. Also, the quilt was hand quilted.

Our group uses poly knit for charity quilts. 12 inch squares. no batting but pieced poly knit for backing and tied. They will last for years. I have one that my grandmother made 30 years ago and I still have to frisk the DD's when they leave to keep it.Looks brand new except for the binding that needs to be replaced.
If you need warm, that will do it!! |
I do not use Double Knit fabrics for making quilts ..... and have 'never' tried. However I thought I might pass along something I do use and "love" Double Knits for.
They make the absolute "best tablecloths" in the world. You never have iron them .... they do not fade ..... and always look fantastic and fresh on your dining table. :thumbup: :-) |
I had an aunt that made quilts from doubleknit in the 70's and they wore like iron.

I have a quilt that has all double knit fabs in them backing too. no batting. It's my cozy snuggle quilt. Been mended so much though from use it's almost newly made LOL And warm, just right.
