Double Wedding Ring--What happened to them?
 

My daughter is getting married, and my search for Double Wedding Ring templates, as well as patterns has revealed that they are very difficult to come by. Are they out of fashion? Doesn't anyone do them anymore? They are so lovely..........

My avatar was made with the Quilt in a day method using her fusible interfacing.

I've made 3 of them in the past several years. I got the template from the book Egg Money Quilts by Eleanor Burns. (my avatar is actually a double wedding ring quilt)

Check out Eleanore Burns books and web site . Her patterns are so easy to understand, she walks you through every step. Her book Egg Money Quilts is excellant. You might be able to get a Gently Used one from amazon.com

There is another process called InkLingo. It is designed with hand stitching in mind, but you can also use it with a machine. Go to InkLingo.com and check it out. You print your pieces with the actual stitching lines and match-up lines by fusing your material to freezer paper and running them through your printer. The end results of this method are fantastic!

I have the Flynn template and instructions. The arcs are made with strip sets that are cut and then made smaller on one side, forming the arc. Then you trim to match the arc template and it fits perfectly. They come in sizes from 5" to 24".

Look into templates that are rotary cut by Shar Jorgensen. They are acrylic and you can do a pieced arc or a solid arc. I think they are pink in color. I have helped a friend do two quilts with those, and they turned out great.

You might want to check out Cheryl Phillip's Rings that Bind book. It has just been reissued. It is a quilt as you go Double Wedding Ring quilt. Cheryl was a guest on Kaye Wood to demo this method. I actually purchased the DVD of that show, but, you can now watch it on You Tube. It will show you how to construct the quilt. The nice thing is, when you are done making the blocks, you are done with the quilt. It does use a lot of fabric in it's construction, but, you are making both the top and the back at the same time.

You have a lot of good suggestions here. They're great to make.

Our local quilt shop, Quilters Common in Wakefield, has been teaching classes in Double Wedding Quilts. They are making them using Quiltsmart (classic quilts using modern methods). It is a printed interfacing, I hear it is a wonderful way to make this quilt and template free. It advertised easy, fast and smart. Everyone who uses this Quiltsmart just loves it and cuts down on your time tremendously. You should definitely try it.

I have the die for the DWR to use with my Go. I can cut a queen size one in about 30 minutes. Every piece fits perfectly. I cut one by rotary cutter and scissors once, never again. The book Rings That Bind is very easy to make a DWR but uses much more fabric then a regular pattern. There are lots of options for making this pattern. I wouldn't go the vintage way, way too tedious. There was no other way then.

I also did my DWR with the Eleanor Burns method. Fast and easy.

I bought the book Rings That Bind from Amazon and there is a template that cones with the book so you can cut the arcs with your rotory cutter.

I made one last year using the old traditional method. I swore never to make one again but I have seen some newer methods and have been thinking maybe I would try one again sometime. Good luck in your endeavor.

I did one and had all the pieces laser cut by Katie Flynn (sorry, don't know her married name) who is John's daughter. It cut down on the time considerably and worth the price for the stress of cutting being gone. The only drawback was laser cutting left a slightly brown edge. That easily disappeared in the 1/4 seam, but if I used steam to press (where are those quilt police?) sometimes the brown would bleed through. When I hand washed a couple of the pieces, the brown totally disappeared. Mom is handquilting it or I'd show a picture.

Oh, yes, you should also know that I won't be making one again. Too many other pretty patterns out there to explore!

I just finished one last fall. Eleanor Burns has a DWR pattern. There is also one called "The Rings that BInd" which is a quilt as you go. I made that and won't again just because I get frustrated easily. The book came with a template. PM me if I can help further. I think I may have a freebie that I printed from somewhere.

i can recommend the john flynn system. someone posted the link. did a queen size and when i find time i'll be doing another one. was fun & simple to put together.

I am working on a Double Wedding Ring quilt right now. I used a pattern from an old quilt book and traced the pieces, then cut them by hand. My grandmother taught me to quilt and that is the only way I know how to do it.

I've used both the John Flynn and the Marti Michell methods. Either will work fine but I think the MM method might be a little less difficult for you if you've never made them before. You could order her templates direct from Marti Michell (just google her name and her website will come up) or you can also find them at Amazon.com or maybe even your own quilt shop. Good luck. I've made three large DWR's with the JF method and three California King size with the MM method. Both are great.

I use John Flynns templates and pattern book and find it's pretty easy to do. Take some time obviously as it is not a nine patch you're working with but they come out wonderful. Here is the addy to his site:
