dowel endings for wall hangings
Can someone help me? I am making some wall hangings for my COA (Council On Aging). I have some 12" x 1/4" dowels, but I need something to go on the ends of them. I went to one place and was going to buy 2 sets of 50 but when I went to check out the shipping was almost $9...almost twice what the product cost. Has anyone found a place to buy these at a reasonable price?
Thanks Marge |
I use wooden knobs I bought at a hardware store. You could also get round wooden balls at a craft store.
|
I have seen them with buttons glued on the ends.
|
I have found that old wooden spools are excellent for 1/4 inch dowel ends on wallhangings.
|
will ribbons bows work with your wall hangings?
|
I would also check your local hardware store. Bring a dowel with you to check the size.
|
I have used large buttons, door knobs, drawer pulls, even used a couple of nuts (like in nuts an bolts) on a hanger for a man's wall hanging these were on large dowels.
|
Didn't even think to put something on the end of the dowels, I just sand the end a little. But I do have lots of wooden balls that I used for another project - great idea.

I usually use wooden beads. Works very well, lots of sizes and colors. Michael's is a good source.

I'd go and look at all the polystyrene shapes balls eggs etc available make hole on them paint or paper machie to cover.

Thank you everyone. I didn't know anyone had answered me. I'm still trying ti find my way around this forum. Where do you go to find your post?
|
I just use the large wooden beads. They are usually available in any craft department.
|
I've seen some people sew a little corner piece (like a prairie point) in the top two corners of a wallhanging and then slip the dowel in them.

To find any thread you are interested in type the key phrase ("dowel endings" in this case) into the little blank at the top right of any page, hit return, and it will send you to the right page or to a list.

I too use wooden beads , I purchase by the bag at Micheals. Micheals also has a section of assorted wood items that are unfinished, I find interesting stuff there for the ends of dowels.
|
Thanks everyone, and thank you Sierra for that info.

Hi Margie, If you click on your name, view your profile box will come up. Click on it and on the left hand side there will be different choices you can click on. Click on the one that says find latest started threads for ones you started, or find latest posts for the ones you commented on and wish to return to. |
I make my sleeves and dowels about an inch or two shorter than the quilt, so the ends of the dowels don't show at all. I usually screw a small eye bolt in each end and that's how I hang my quilts. I have not hung large, heavy quilts this way, just wall hangings.
If you click on "settings" in the upper right corner, it will bring up a list of threads you are "subscribed" to. When you start a thread, or reply to a thread, you are automatically subscribed to it, and it will show up there if there has been activity. |
You can buy the wooden balls with the hole in them at Hobby Lobby and Michaels in the unfinished wood section.
|
Michaels and Hobby Lobby both have a lot of small wooden items that work on the end of dowels, you can paint or stain them if you want.

I've used the dowels for wall hangings, one hanging had fish, so drilled holes and ran fishing line thru to hold, one had ric rac, so used ric rac to hang it, so cute. have used about anything I have around the house to seal the ends.
