DP9 in 1930's reproduction fabrics

I love (addicted, if I tell the truth) 1930's reproduction fabrics. I have made several scrappy 4 patch quilts, 12 patch quilts and a string quilt. I would love to make a DP9 with my stash. Would it work if all the fabrics were different and I didn't use a solid? Do DP9's need a solid to make it work? I am horrible at picturing what it would look like and I don't have any software on my computer to help me visualize it.

I made a D9P with 9 different fabrics, none of them a solid. Very scrappy looking. If I did it again, I would use the same fabric for all the center squares of the 9 patches, for a more uniform look.

D9P would be very pretty in 30's fabrics. I have made them in christmas, pepper, batiks, modas. They all seem to work out fine in any collection, even scrappy. But, I do think it looks better if the color that "pops" is the same in every center square. Afterall, those are the pieces that are cut the smallest and your minds eye follows them around the quilt.

Maybe do the center in white. It should set off the 1930's.

I just finished one. The only constant was a light grey in the center. I used and 20 different fabrics. And i love 30s repros!

How could it not look good in 30's prints?!

SherriB 10-20-2013 10:16 AM

I think I will do it with white as the center block. Thanks for all the suggestions!!

This is two of the D9P's that I made a few years ago. Used 7 different fabrics and fussy cut the deer using 2 pictures per 9 patch square. on the first one and on the second on I used 9 different colors with the center being white.

I use any and all fabrics for D9P which is what it is designed for but I agree with this member I feel the centre square must be the same and I must admit to using a eye popper fabric.

These were my 3 DP9 quilts that I made. The first 2 yellow shade quilts were used all fabrics that I had in my stash and the last one I bought charm pack from J0-Ann Fabrics Store. Please take a look......

They are all great quilts - I haven't made one yet - but ya'll are inspiring me!

I really like the 1930's fabrics, the white or solid color tones are good mixed in with the prints.

SherriB 10-22-2013 11:31 AM

I love all the quilts pictured!! I am leaning towards a white center block or maybe a sea foam green.

Here is a scrappy D9P. I especially like this setting when you're doing scrappy:

If you don't want to have a constant like white, then be sure to have very good contrast between your two fabric colors.

Here is a D4P using a white paired up with scrappy 30's fabrics:

Granted, it's not in 30's fabrics but, IMHP, for me - - - it's too busy and you lose the pattern.
