I discovered in my stash a stack of 5" squares, decided to try DP9 and was wondering if you could just pick up and sew any piece willy nilly scrappy or if it really made a difference in the color value/placement???? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the DP9 tutorial and she mentioned the placement of dark squares in center and four corners but I don't think I have enough dark/lights to do it this way. What do you wonderful, sharing, caring people think????

I did one recently and used the same fabric in only the center of each 9 patch and lots of different ones in the other 8 squares of the 9 patch. It came out really cute.

Ok, I can admit that I don't know everything. What is DP9?

quiltluvr 11-03-2009 11:00 AM

Disappearing nine patch. They are a very easy pattern and so versatile.

I think you should make one any way you want. There are no rules. "Experiments" can be unexpected masterpieces.

Thanks ever so much, she is the one that I have the DP9 tute on, how about that :D :D Haven't been back to her site since or I would have known :?: I like your idea, I'm pretty sure I have enough to make one the center in all of them. Thank you, thank you.

Up North 11-03-2009 11:03 AM

Keep in mind the center will be cut into 4 pieces. If you want it a focus fabric it needs to be on a corner.

Nursesews 11-03-2009 11:07 AM

Thanks for that info, didn't know that, that will change how I look at the fabric I have now won't it. I am fairly new so all suggestions are appreciated. :D :D

Olivia's Grammy 11-03-2009 11:15 AM

I still don't get it. I mean I know what a 9 patch is, but I've never heard of a disappearing one. I need a visual

That link with the heart blocks is great! It helps give a visual to go by if you are using a directional print. Thanks for sharing! :D

I have made many of the heart D9P. The two heart blocks do not have to turn upside down. The hearts will be right side up after cutting and sewing, the middle small squares will be going in the opposite direction, that's all turning upside down does.

At first, I didn't understand what you mean. But now that I see the other picture, I get it. Instead of "turning" the blocks, you just place them differently in the layout. I guess I needed the visual! :D

I did have to place some of the hearts upside down in the nine patch, because I made my quilt 5 blocks by 5 blocks. I wanted all of the hearts to go in the same direction. The blocks in the fifth roll going up and down and the last roll across the bottom had to be planned. If I had made it 4 blocks by 4 blocks or 8 blocks by 8 blocks, then it would not have been necessary to turn any of the hearts upside down.

Thank you for the links and pattern directions. I have to make 3 baby quilts and this is a great idea for one of them, maybe two!

This is a good site to see no matching blocks. I thought the quilt would look odd, but it doesn't. Thanks.

sewnsewer2 11-04-2009 03:33 PM

hereca622 your heart quilt is very pretty! Thanks for showing it. :D

Tiffany 11-05-2009 08:01 AM

For some reason I missed the heart quilt above when I read this thread yesterday. It is so cute! I think I'll have to make one for my Secret Sister for Valentine's Day. And one for myself!
