I have another dresden question. I've made a plate using silk neckties. How do I make the center? I've been giving it extra support with iron-on interfacing, but I can't figure out how to do the center.

Have you thought about making a large-sized yo-yo?

I just made a circle, basted around the edges and then turned those edges down and appliqued it on. I liked the look of putting a circle of batting in under so it poofed a little.

Don't feel that you "must" add in a centre circle.

I have an antique dresden plate quilt ... there are no sewn on centre circles.

The centre is turned under like typical applique and the background shows thru in that centre hole.

I learned a real easy way to make the circles. Measure the center ato see what size circle you need. Cut the circle out of template plastic (cereal box if necessary). Place the circle tremplate on the back side of your material and mark around using whatever marker you want. Cut out leaving a good 1/4 inch all around. Take your cut out material and run a running stitch all around close to the edge. Place the circle template back and draw up your gathering thread. Press using starch or sizing. Let dry and remove the template. You now have a perfectly round circle to applique in the center of your dresden plate. You can do this by hand or by machine...what ever you prefer

I do the center using two circles. You sew them together and trim slits in the back one, then turn the circle and attach. This has pictures and explains it better than I do:

Just adjust your circle size according to how big you want it. :)

I made a nice wrinkled circle with Texture Magic, applique it to the center raw edged and turned them into wild flowers.
