My mom is making a Dresden Plate on a white background. She was wanting to know whether she needs to turn under the edge before doing what she is calling a button hole stitch around them or will just stitching the raw edges be o.k.?

If she has fused the dresden plates she can just do the buttonhole stitch. If she has not fused the plates down then they will ravel if she does not turn the edge under.

What would you recommend she fuses with?

Marcia 02-12-2010 06:05 PM

I use Heat and Bond light--I buy it by the roll at my Walmart.

Is she going to applique by hand or by machine?

She does everything by hand. Will this fusion stuff not be stiff? I will let her know.

It is "soft" enough to hand stitch through, but if I was doing hand applique I would just turn under the edges and stitch them down, then do the buttonhole stitch.

Thank you very much. A long time ago I appliqued a Southern Belle on a quilt top and I used something strong enough that she can stand up by herself.
