I am making a dresden plate quilt for my very best friend's 25th wedding anniversary out of orientals. The attached picture is how I want to set it, but, I made 25 dresden plates, one for each year. Her bed is a large kingsize and is very high off the floor. So, my question is: with 25 12" sq blocks would you set them on point or row by row? I'm hoping someone on here could do a quick EQ for me or is better at the mathematical aspect than me!

PegD 03-10-2011 04:31 AM

Wouldn't they have to be on point to make use of all 25? That is beautiful by the way.

earthwalker 03-10-2011 04:37 AM

I am a complete loser at this aspect of quilting (I actually make blocks and lay them on the bed!). I just wanted to say this is a beautiful design, and I really will try and focus on the mathematics of the process, so I can do things "properly". Great question, and I am sure this will help a lot of us.

jtquilts 03-10-2011 04:38 AM

I am sorry to not be any help with the setting . . . . just want to say how beautiful is the quilt design!

Marion Jean 03-10-2011 04:40 AM

Can't help you with the math - my brain shuts down when it hears "math"- I need to do things visually. This is a really beautiful design. Your friend should be extremely happy with this wonderful gift.

No 5 x 5 :) Or ... stagger a row of 3 then a row of 2.

I like them on point BTW.

Zephyr 03-10-2011 05:39 AM

You think your math is off. I was trying my hand at Dresden plate. Got one HUGE Dresden plate with about a 4-5 in center. Well I'll figure out how to use that in a charity quilt. So I thought I try and make some much smaller ones to go with it. No way. I ended up with another HUGE circle, 4" dresden sections and a HUGE hole in the center. No EQ here, I'll have to do Search or Google for some help.

PegD 03-10-2011 05:54 AM

Oops, what was I thinking. And yes, I like them on point also.

A reg. king is 76x80 and a cal. king is 72x84. The big question is what is the depth of the mattress. If the mattress is say 15" thick then add 30" to 76" then 2-3" for each side it to go below the top mattress.

So 76+30+4= 110 wide

Now Do you want the quilt to go over just the top of the pillows or tuck in? I probably would do 80" + 15" + 2" = 97" for under pillows. I probably would add 6" to that # if to go over the pillows and if tucked I would add the additional 15".

So tucked would be 80+15+2+15= 112

110x112

this comes out to 110x110

Thanks for the picture of your wonderful quilt. It truly is beautiful. I have just chosen the fabric for my very first dresden to go in my very first sampler quilt. I love the sashing. Thanks also, Denise, for working out the math. I also have a kingsize bed and would love to make a dresden quilt for myself. But certainly not up to the math part yet.

I vote for the on-point layout. I'm sure it will be great either way. Lucky friend.

mhansen6 03-10-2011 06:48 AM

That is really cool! How did you do that? Do you have a specific computer program? I love designing my own quilts, but I just use Excel and can't get always what I want.

quilterella 03-10-2011 06:51 AM

I really love the on-point setting. Thank you for taking the time to help me out...it is greatly appreciated.

Tinabodina 03-10-2011 07:00 AM

This is well beyond my scope.

This not an actual quilt that I have made, although I have made a couple dresden plates. This is a posting from searching "dresden plates" here on the board. I just wanted to make sure no-one thought I was taking credit for something I didn't do. Saf commented on how much she liked my quilt, but, as I said it was someone else's posting.

That is just so nice of you to do this for a board member. Seeing it truly makes it happen and looks great.

sewcrafty 03-10-2011 08:02 AM

Didn't take very long as I just went through this figuring out a large bed quilt myself not to long ago and EQ7 did the hard work! :-D

Grama Lehr 03-10-2011 09:29 AM

Can't answer your question, but just wanted to tell you that your quilt is stunning!!

Bonnie 03-10-2011 11:49 AM

Same here :D

fatquarters 03-10-2011 12:28 PM

That is very nice of you sew crafty, I wonder if you made one less row each direction, widened the sashing just a touch, made dresdans in all squares instead of blank squares and added boarders???

What would happen if we staggered rows of 4 dresdens and then 3 dresdens, making it so it had dresdens in every block. Is this even possible. I really need to invest on EQ7. I had EQ5 at one time but for some reason the CDs are nowhere to be found.

You mean like this?

it ends up 88x109

fatquarters 03-10-2011 02:20 PM

Yes kinda like that but shorter, same width, it would be88x88 then, you could made up width with a boarder. I like it.

gal288 03-10-2011 02:22 PM

On point, thanks sewcrafty, you made it very easy to calculate.

whinnytoo 03-10-2011 02:43 PM

Lovely setting, really brings out the dresden plates!!!!

quilterella 03-10-2011 04:10 PM
