I am working on my 1st dresden plate block with curved top. I zig zaged the curve & hand sewed the center. Now if I make a tablerunner out of the blocks with sashing do you SID in each spoke?
When I make the quilt sandwhich do I cut out the excess fabric from behind the plate below the zig zag line & the center circle? Or just SID around the whole block?

Your batting may dictate whether you can just SID the entire block or whether you SID each blade. The one my Mom made for me the Longarm quilter SID each blade. I have seen people cut the excess fabric and people who have left the fabric. It can be a little stiff if you leave it.

I would stitch each spoke, and I wouldn't cut anything away under the plate or you will lose the puffy quilting. Can't wait to see how it turns out. oops! re-read, thought you already had it sandwiched. So yes, you could cut away excess, depends on rather you feel it is too stiff and needs to go.

I am making a Dresden Plate baby quilt at this time and the pattern that I'm following doesn't call for the fabric under the plate to be removed so I guess it's a mater of taste

Why would you cut away the fabric under the plates?

I made my DD one. I didn't cut away the fabric and did SID the blades. She loves it.

I SID between the petals. I didn't cut away anything and just centered the circle in the middle.

Cutting away excess fabric under an applique (not just the Dresden Plate) takes out some of the thickness because the background fabric acts as a foundation piece otherwise.

It also keeps the quilting flatter than having the plate by itself.

Some people like the extra support - some don't. Another personal preference.
