I have a concern with using the dryer sheets as the foundation in pieced squares. Occasionally I have noticed little oily spots left on solid colors where there has been a dryer sheet in the batch. So when someone mentioned using the squares in foundation piecing. I immediately thought about the oil residue. So I took a dryer sheet that had been run through the dryer once with a batch of clothes. I pressed it with a hot iron over a brown paper bag. Oil stains. Moved it to another area of the bag. More oil stains. 3 times, 4 times.

Any comments on this? I would not want to stain my quilt blocks.

i think if you want to use these things in your quilt you should wash them first just like you would do with anything you're putting in your quilt.

once washed it shouldn't have an oil stain problem

I've never used dryer sheets for foundations. I have several pieces of really thin fabric that I use up that way. I have no idea how I ended up with the thin ones, but they definitely can't be used for pieced quilts, and I just use it up. Batiste? Is that what the thin stuff is called?

I have made two very large quilts using dryer sheets. I saw no oily residue. But I also washed every one by themselves as I would a load of clothes. After I had the amount I needed for a quilt. I put them in a net bag and washed them in detergent and some bleach. dryed them in dryer and iron the flat. A little time consuming but I didn't mind because they made wonderful foundation.

You can use large coffee filters. msaster

I haven't seen any with oil stains but love the way it makes a good foundation.
