I'm thinking of buying a pair of duckbill scissors at the Quilt and Craft Show down in Brisbane tomorrow. Have any of you used them, and are they worth buying, or am I better to buy a pair of curved scissors for my applique?

Buy a pair. I love mine and use it for more than applique. Mine makes the nicest smooth cutting edge.

I use both. The duck bill helps with the larger areas while the smaller curved scissors can get in the teeniest of areas.

I love the duckbill scissors. I use them for trimming applique, but, also for trimming those little clusters when I use the locking stitch on my machine. They are a worthy investment!

If used correctly, duckbills help you to not cut material accidentally whilst getting very close in the cutting. I have found them just as useful as the curved scissors. These scissors are so inexpensive overseas that I don't think some are aware of our need to make choices in the name of finances or economy. I would try to work out how often you would be likely to use both and then make the choice. Hope you are not sorry. either way.

Why don't you wait and talk to the ladies at the Quilt show on Wednesday. It will pay you to get their expert knowledge and then decide. I do applique but have not gotten the scissors yet but I will be there too, maybe we can meet some where?

Have them but rarely use them.....a little too bulky for me. I love my omnigrid micro tip scissors for snipping, seam ripping, applique and embroidery. Once I found them years ago there just isn't any comparison for me. The points are so fine and tiny that they are just perfect for precision work.

I love mine, udse them( for applique and for reducing bulk in facing seams in garments.

I find mine awkward. I have better luck with a small sharp pair of curved cuticle scissors.

You're not wrong jitkaau, Scissorman is selling the silver Gingher ones for $59.95, and the gold Premax ones for $29.95.

I do a lot of applique, but being on a fixed income I'm wondering if it's worth spending that sort of money on them.

I havent seen these scissors. I cut alot, but it justuse tiny curved scissors.

I have a pair and really should use them more often. They're great for grading seams and larger appliques but I use my really small curved scissors for smaller pieces.

Thanks everyone for your input. I went to the Show yesterday, but there was not a pair of duckbills around.

I bought a pair of small very fine curved scissors, a very small pair of "applique' scissors - not the duckbill ones I was looking for, and which cost $59.95 - but these have a circular tip on each blade, and are only about 4" long. Have yet to use them, but at $5, if they don't work out, it's no big loss - which the duckbill ones would have been. Actually I think they may be better - not so awkward for small pieces.

Will let you know how they go.
