DUH- Where was my brain?
 

I'm gonna confess. I am fairly new to quilting as far as fmq and the newer techy type things that are out but this doesnt excuse the lasp of thought process I suffered the other day. Here we go. I just recently landed my first commissioned quilt. Talked to the client, drew up an estimate for all supplies, and a drawing of what the quilt would look like. All with pretty much no problem. Once it was approved I began placing the order for the fabrics and for some reason started to worry about the stitching from the front showing through on the back and looking out of place. So, I spent the next two days stressing over this trying to find a fabric that had all the colors from the front for the backing. Be patient I'm getting there. One the morning of the third day after no luck I was about ready to scream and give up so I took a break and just chilled. A few minutes later, the light bulb went off. Dont put that color in the bobbin, just use one that blends with the back. The solution was so simple but I just couldnt get the thought process together. Not sure if it was nerves over making sure that this quilt comes out wonderful or what but boy, just goes to show that at one point or another we all have a newbie moment. So, what was a newbie moment for you. I would love to hear them.:D

Actually pretty much the same as yours! I'm working on an ironing mat for me. After I finished the feathered wreath for the center and was about to try some feathers around the edges, DH decided I should do maple leaves around the edges. He gets testy when I don't comply, so I have set it up, but haven't started it yet. I have collected all the colors we discussed. The top is purple, but the back has hot pink flowers. Orange, yellow and red is not my idea of attractive! I did the same as you & started to stress. Then remembered I could use just deep green for the bobbin & it would be spring on the back & fall on the top! LOL!

Coming from a garment sewing background when I first started quilting I thought my thread needed to match the fabric. I bought (and still have) every color of thread I could find. Ran off bobbin after bobbin to make sure I was ready when color changed. And this is the truth; it took me years to realize the thread (if your stitching is good) does not have to match. I now buy black and white, and about three shades of light to dark grays and browns. And cream to sew on white. The colorful thread now sits in large ginger jars decorating the top of a lawyers bookcase. I actually get excited when I have something to sew that requires a matched thread.

Me, too. Except I use sage green or smoky green as one of my neutrals.

Doesn't make you laugh at yourself when you have these lightbulb moments sometimes? Does me.

At least you figured it out before you stitched the whole quilt. Now why would I think of that?
