My husband just found out he is allergic to just about Everything except me, which includes dust. How can I keep the dust of quilting at a minimum?
I spent today cleaning the house a bit more than normal in those hard to reach places to get the dust down. House is generally clean all the time, but wanted to do more to help him out.

Now... I'm going to enjoy the sun for a few and then go sew some seams on my log cabin wall hanging.

My father was allergic to dust - they bought a whole house air filtration system and that did the trick.

sewcrafty 03-19-2010 12:28 PM

How dare he cut into your quilting time!!!!  Hope he gets better!

My son is major asthmatic. We have no carpet because of dust. His bed and pillows are in protective covers. There is a whole house air filter as well as a HEPA filter in his room. Harvest season is the bane of my existence. Just try to keep the dust out with combines going!!

I have been sneezing like mad this year, i bought a bottle of Clorox Anwhere anti-allergen spray, sprayed the furniture and rug, sneezing has almost stopped. Might help your dh out.

amma 03-19-2010 01:34 PM

You might try using the upholstery brush attachment on your vacuum on the quilts inbetween washings... I am allergic to dust, I take cloth items outdoors and shake them out too... carpets are the worst, just walking on them stirs up the dust

MadQuilter 03-19-2010 01:38 PM

You are much kinder than I was. DH is allergic to lots of things too (dander, fur, dust, pollen..) I suggested that he could move out. He decided on allergy shots instead.

There are quite a few air filters and air purifiers on the market. I'd suggest investigating them and investing in one.

amandasgramma 03-19-2010 02:14 PM

I'd tell him to stay out of your quilting room!!!

I have severe allergies and asthma. And we live in a VERY dusty area and have two cats and I HATE cleaning house. That being said....I take Zyrtec every day for the allergies during bad times and sometimes I add Sudafed at night. I'm still alive and I'm still quilting. Oh, the cats are still here, too.

Sugarpumpkin 03-19-2010 02:26 PM

I am allergic to A LOT of things, including dust. I quilt, and sometimes I do sneeze while quilting but I find that if we clean the house once every two weeks that it keeps the dust to a minimum. Also, we don't have windows open.

But it also depends on how allergic he is..I think mine is just mild so I am able to manage.

EllaBud 03-19-2010 02:33 PM

Get a HEPA vacuum (with a high efficiency particulate filter), dust with a damp cloth (to trap the dust) and clean/replace your heater filters every 3 months with HEPA style ones. And clean your floors and everything else often. I have a very allergic dog and I do that for her. A pain, but it definitely helps.

I recommend a maid who can do the deep clean each week for you, you can focus on quilting then!!!

I am allergic to a lot of stuff, weeds, grasses, trees (about 25), dust, cats & dogs....

I take generic Claritin every day of the year, and use Nasonex. We have cats and dogs, but did cut down our 60' Sycamore tree in our backyard. Bakersfield is dust central, so, not much I can do about that. We have a HEPA filter in our central a/c & heat unit. It helps.

athenagwis 03-19-2010 03:32 PM

Hubby is also allergic to dust, but only when it gets stirred up. Dust sitting still on things doesn't bother him at all. So I just stopped cleaning and that seemed to do the trick .... tehehehehheeh :)

My daughter has asthma, no drapes, curtains, or knick knacks. Tile floor, clothes stored in another room, Put a door mat by the door in room you quilt in to catch the bits and pieces. Keep the humidity up on dry days, the more moisture in the air keeps the dust from floating around.

QuiltingGrannie 03-19-2010 04:18 PM

Thanks for all the tips. He also found out he is allergic to several foods! Onions, nuts (except almonds), strawberries, oats, eat yolks. Oh, and two of the meds he is on aren't helping either, so they are working on changing those.

So sad to see/hear DUST getting so mich notoriety---which reminds me that I probably should do that domestic duty--and then get over that guilt so I can enjoy Natl Quilting Day! Hope you all do too.

If I don't wash my room-Pergo floors, curtains, everything in the room AND alllll my bedding-My nose and throat let me know. I used to take weekly allergy shots, but now I use Allegra every day, and have recently noticed some improvement using a Netty pot (non-invasive).
Also, I have to wash all my bedding with De-mite or in hot water. Needless to say, my quilts take a beating. So, I tried a duvet.

However, a duvet 1, hides the quilt and 2, is a chore to use when removing the quilt before washing (every two weekes. I went back to using a quilt.

I finally made a simple panel quilt that I wash frequently.
(I tied it and machine quilted it-it's strong.)

All the above help me.
Good luck!

There is a place down the road from me that is a duct cleaning company. I see them advertised alot and it says it helps to clean out your ducts every few years, you'd be amazed how much dust accumulates in there.

When my husband went for allergy testing, I asked him not to be allergic to house dust. Of course, I didn't get my wish. His main allergies are house dust & animal dander. We don't have pets, I stored or got rid of most of the knick knacks, no carpet in the bedroom. My husband would like carpet throughout the whole house & I said that is a bad idea with his allergies. I try to clean a little more often but I'm not sure I will ever have a dust free house.

justwannaquilt 03-20-2010 01:03 PM

Get the shot! lol I did for several years. I was allergic to EVERYTHING I should have lived in a bubble and then it still probably wouldn't have been allergin free! Now it is as if I was never allergic to anything in my life! They really do allow for a normal life, and they only take about 15 minutes out of your week.

When I was a baby my dad refused to get rid of the cat so my mom gave him a bath once a week and she would add a little bit of downy (fabric softner) to the water. I never had a problem and the cat splet with my most of my life.

Sparky 03-21-2010 04:18 PM

Did you find out if it was dust mites or house dust? Dust mites are a very common allergy. Here is a link to an article about them from the Mayo Clinic http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dust-mites/DS00842

Hope everything works outs. I too have allergies and they are a pain!! I'm allergic to cats (have one), mold, plus all the seasonal. On meds constantly to try and overcome. Foods are going to be a problem. My son contracted a seafood allergy when puberty hit!!!

Are you vacuuming your mattress'? That actually is a big one! Once I got my Kirby that is something that I now do often. In fact, check your vacuum cleaner and see if it has a HEPA filter in it. They do help!!!

He is on meds but says he hasn't noticed the difference. I am looking into a better vacuum. And he is still eating the foods he is allergic to, so I can't see him winning this one.

sewcrafty 03-26-2010 09:06 AM

 Just like a man!! The doc doesn't know what he's talking about.

Sharon321 03-26-2010 09:33 AM

I too have allergies. Allergist says I am his most allergic patient. Can't do the nasal sprays or that antihistamines but once in a while. Ever heard of someone being allergic to antihistamines. (Sleep for long time like 24-36 hours).

Nettie pot helps, tile floor, cover mattress and pillows, rainbow vacuum or hepa filter vacuum, Hepa air filtes, hire a maid once a week to throughly dust. But if he won't cooperate, tell him you are increasing his life insurance and hiring a hit man. LOL

Jingle 03-26-2010 09:39 AM

I wouldn't worry so much about the dust if he won't give up the food. I doubt cleaning more often would make a big difference.
