Easiest way to quilt Falling Charms

1 Attachment(s)
I am finishing a Falling Charms quilt. Very bright yellow with Kaffe Fassett blocks and aqua polka dot flannel back. What would be the easiest or simple way to machine quilt this quilt? I have never attempted to do this before so this will be scary for me. My friend says to decorative stitch down middle of yellow zig zag solids and x across the Kaffe Fassett blocks. The border around is 4 inches and yellow as well.

Any help will be appreciated!!!

Lovely bright quilt but no ideas on quilting

Your friend's suggestion of an X in the print squares is not bad. You could try a kind of swirly design in the yellow strips, starting from where it meets the two print squares, swirl toward the opposite edge of the strip, and then back toward the endpoint of the strip. It makes a nice counterpoint to the geometric shape of the X. Just an idea.

sounds like a good plan, but please be sure and check the info on your batting package. That will tell you the farthest apart your quilting lines can be. Just double check that a single line of quilting down the zigzag will provide enough coverage. You don't want your beautiful quilt to get ruined the first time you launder it.
Also, did you prewash the flannel? Flannel shrinks a lot more than quilting cotton and could also pull your quilt out of square.

I have made several and I just did stitch in the ditch on the long seams both vertically and horizontally. Sorry for the squiggly lines. Hope this helps

your fabric choices are beautiful.

If you are going to quilt straight lines with a walking foot, check the batting for how far apart the quilting needs to be. If it's 10 inches you can follow the seam lines in a grid pattern first. After that you can determine how much more quilting you want to add.

I would crosshatch this quilt. You can space the lines out as wide as you want. I might just end up doing it on the Falling Charm quilt I am currently working on with pinks and oranges.

I did pre-wash the flannel. I appreciate all the great suggestions.

The batting states you can quilt up to 4 inches. So that means my quilting should be no more than 4 inches apart is that correct?

tesspug 01-14-2016 12:54 PM

You are correct. I use painters tape to mark a line down the center, either straight across or on the diagonal. Then I use the edge of the tape to guide my walking foot. Use 3" wide tape. Go down both sides, then move the tape next to one of the lines and keep going. They also have tape with fancy edges.

What a great idea tesspug thank you!

that is correct, and make sure you measure in all directions, including the diagonal!

I am not sure about how to quilt it, but I sure will be interested in seeing the final product. I love yellow, I love KF fabrics...so, I expect to love the results.

I did a curvy line in the solid and a flower in each block, I think. Let me find a picture. I was right, but the picture won't load. Another way to get there:

I have made a few of these quilts also, and always do stitch in the ditch. They have been washed and dried several times and have held their shape.

tessagin 01-16-2016 11:05 AM

You may want to do what I call an on -the-bank which is off the ditch and maybe use a zigzag. Love your top colors and backing.

tessagin 01-16-2016 11:07 AM

This is cool too!!

I think your quilt is beautiful. I would put a lot more pins in it before you start to keep it from shifting.
Good luck

Love this suggestion!

I like that wavy stitch, did you freehand it or use a template and draw it?

Mimiqwerty 01-17-2016 10:00 AM

I have made several of these, and I just do a basic meander FMQ over the entire top. Looks great, and quilts up quickly. Sorry no picture, but they've all held up well to machine washing and drying.

Irishrose2 01-17-2016 11:04 AM

I just freehanded it. I had a bad experience marking a quilt so I try to avoid it. The flowers were drawn on waxed paper and quilted through it. Just use a permanent marker and let it dry so there's no color picked up by the needle and thread.
