Easy Binding Winder

I was wondering if any of you have ordered, or used the new Easy Binding Winder. If so; what are your opinions?

I just drop my binding on the floor between my feet and sew away. I wash and dry the finished quilts anyway so it works.

quiltingcandy 09-06-2015 06:57 PM

Not sure why you would need one. When I make my binding I wrap it around a ruler as I make it, then just go from there to the quilt. I don't make mine until I am ready to put it on the quilt.

I remember reading that you can wrap the fabric around the toilet paper roll, and you can insert a ribbon or string in the roll hole and hang it around your neck or whatever, keeping the fabric totally controlled and off the floor, etc

luvstoquilt 09-07-2015 03:31 AM

I use a cardboard that comes in the cat food box. It is about 8x5". I love how easy it is and it doesn't tangle. I just drop the cardboard on the floor and it unwinds as I sew. I always cut the binding when I cut the quilt so I have several cards wit binding. I sometimes even label them. Works for me.

That is such a great idea! I am going to try that when I bind up my next quilt, thanks!

I wouldn't spend the money on one. I press my binding in half and then wrap around my hand, take it to my quilt and lightly pin it around the edges, to make sure the seams don't land on the corners. Why make more work out of it?

This is what I do as well. I always make sure no binding seams fall on the corners of the quilt. I just hang the binding strips on a hanger until I'm ready to use them.

kuntryquilter 09-08-2015 03:58 AM

I put mine on an empty toilet tissue roll, put a strip of fabric or ribbon through the roll & hang it around my neck. It works

ManiacQuilter2 09-08-2015 04:20 AM

Too many gadgets that we really don't need. I have used a TP cardboard when I have cut the binding before I am ready to attach it to the quilt.

cat-on-a-mac 09-08-2015 04:29 AM

I use a piece of 2" diameter PVC pipe, about 15" long. It's nice and sturdy. We always seem to have stuff like that left over from home improvement projects.

I bought one pool noodle at the dollar store, I cut it in several lengths, roll the binding on them, pin it then when I am ready just put it on the floor and sew. Its wayyyy better than tp holder, and can be used for many things. I also pin my applique and hand work on them and keeps it from getting lost and wrinkled. Love them and very inexpensive.

Jakers1 09-08-2015 05:19 AM

A few hints on using the TP cardboard. First, pin the end to the cardboard before winding. Second, wind tightly - otherwise it will unroll wildly. Ask me how I know! I use this all the time and it is a breeze to put on bniding.

I do the same. Cheap and does the job.

I love pool noodles! Had not thought of that one. I buy them at the end of summer when on sale. Cut them to length to keep your boots upright!!

I like a wider binding than the Binding Winder will allow. I use to use a paper towel roller but then one day as I was finishing up a roll of Food Saver bags I noticed the roller was a lot better....more heavy duty. I just put a piece of yarn though it and roll my binding up on it and it works great. A lot better than having it sit beside me on the table I think.

I read about that here, too. That is what I do and it works well for me. I do use a stiffer core than that on toilet paper.

I have one and it's not worth the money in my opinion. Great idea, but not really functional

Snooze2978 09-08-2015 07:18 AM

I'm trying not to purchase every gadget that comes around and I hated having my binding pooled on the floor as I attached it to my quilt so would roll it onto a flat cardboard I get from the canned cat food case or onto a TP cardboard. Came up with another idea as it would still be on the floor and the cat would have a lot of fun batting it around while I was attaching it so now I have it on a wire coat hanger. Had a few of these old timers laying around so cut a slot in the middle of the bottom rung and slid my TP roller onto it and hung it on a pipe on my rafters above. My sewing room is in the basement and its not finished totally so open beams with pipes strung around. Anyway, I can put 4-5 sets of bindings onto the hanger and pull it off as I need it. I Elmer Glue my binding onto my quilt top and then take it to the machine to stitch it so this idea is working great for me now.

I made a small heavy paper towel holder out of a piece of 2x4. drilled a small hole for a wooden dowel and gorilla glued it. I saved the cardboard roll from plastic wrap and foil wrap. They're heavier. You can make lots of binding to have on hand. Use bit of tape to attach to the roll and a pin to keep the ends in place for each roll of binding. Great for cording also.
Any paper towel holder such as pedestal type will work also.

Friday1961 09-08-2015 09:53 AM

My binding goes in my lap while I sew it on. I do see that for a king size quilt, one might need a more organized way of handling it, but I know nothing about these winders.

TexasSunshine 09-08-2015 03:49 PM

I wrap my binding around an empty paper towel roll, place it on a vertical paper towel holder, sit it on the floor to my right and it comes off easily as I sew it to the quilt.

rocklady 09-08-2015 05:44 PM

When I have a big quilt to bind, I'll drop it in an ice cream pail as I iron it in half. Then I can set the pail beside me to sew.

GloriaC 09-08-2015 06:42 PM

I put mine in a plastic pail (the ones I buy strawberries in when in season) then I use a command hook and hang it on the wall next to my machine. Don't roll it up or anything just dump it into the basket. Comes out easily and works like a charm.

It sounds like a very workable way to do it but I had to chuckle as I was wondering how to explain it if one of my neighbors rang the doorbell- ha!

This is what I do right now as nothing allowed on my floor as I have a kitty and it would be play material immediately. When I iron for double binding I toss it over my shoulder to avoid it resting on the floor. I hand wind and rubber band it until I need it.

Marley46 09-08-2015 10:37 PM

I start sewing about 1 inch, then throw the binding over my right shoulder and just pull it down as I sew. Works for me!!

ruby2shoes 09-09-2015 02:45 AM

I roll my binding up and put it inside a round 500gm margarine container or food take away container. I have cut a slot in the side of it. I put the lid on and then I can dump it on the floor or my lap. The binding feeds out of the slot I cut. Keeps it dog hair free and manageable.

jeanne49 09-09-2015 03:43 AM

I use empty toilet paper rolls and place it in a box on the floor by my feet. I did purchase in the clearance bin at JoAnns a set of 2 binding rollers but have never used them. Guess I'll have to try them out someday

TheGadgetMan 01-19-2016 08:17 AM

That's the reason we created the Easy Binding Winder, so you don't have to fuss with the twisting. Instead you wind it onto the spool as you press your binding. Also, many of our customers have commented how they don't have to bother pinning it down anymore because it feeds right onto their quilt so easily.

Onebyone 01-19-2016 09:30 AM

I have one and use it. It's handy. I could make do without it but I don't have to.

Jennifer23 01-19-2016 11:47 AM

This looks like exactly the kind of gadget I would buy, except that I don't iron my binding in half before applying it (I prefer to just fold as I go so that I don't have a crease pressed in). It looks too narrow to hold an unfolded binding, so I guess it's not for me.

Prekteacher 01-19-2016 01:41 PM

My husband gave me one for my birthday. Love it! Alwys had a problem of the binding twisting when I rolled it on a tp roll. No problems now. Also it unrolls easy without falling over when I sew binding to quilt. The best part, it was under 20 and my husband gave me another 100 to go with it. Was able to buy a floor model LED light!

Quiltngolfer 01-20-2016 04:36 AM

I use the toilet paper roll method. Works fine!

Hmmmmm.........

Geri B 01-20-2016 07:29 AM

How wide is that spool?..additional spools available?
If that spool is wide enough I could see it being used to abut/attach other things besides binding.......laces, sequin strips, elastic, etc......

Snooze2978 01-20-2016 09:10 AM

I installed a TP holder onto the rafter in the ceiling. My sewing room is in the basement so open rafters above. I used to roll my bindings onto an empty TP cardboard and onto the TP holder but it would unroll all by itself. Then I found if I squished the cardboard it would keep it from unrolling. I also rolled some onto the flat 4 x 6 separator cardboard found in the cartons of canned cat food, then take the cardboard out and just put the rolled binding onto the TP holder. That seems to work the best till I get down to the end when it starts to knot up on me. But either way its off the floor and I'm not apt to trip over it.

Quilter 65 01-21-2016 09:25 AM

I put the tp holder in a small cardboard box between my feet. Off the floor and it can't roll around willy-nilly. This is my favorite way. Have tried others but this is the winner in my opinion.

OzarksGma 01-22-2016 06:14 PM

I used to roll on TP roll till I got my binding winder. So much faster to wind on plastic roll. I don't even press in half, just fold and wind up. I make my binding before I do the quilting, so as soon as it comes off the frame I can trim and pin the binding on the edges. I adjust for seams hitting at corners and proceed to sew on the quilt.

Yes, you can purchase extra spools. I have ten yards of binding on one. My binding is 2.5" before folding it in half. The spool is probably 2" .
