The very first block was a little crooked but practice makes perfect. I do have a question though. Is there a star quilt that can fill the very middle of a quilt?

The long star can be made quite large. There are several sites out there for patterns, this is just one.

A long time ago when I wrote to friends I would make my own stationary and one of the designs I created looked like a playing card. I'd love to recreate the border but I need something to fill in the middle. Any suggestions?

I recommended this on another thread and some others have recommended it here. The Rail Fence pattern is simple to put together but looks great when it is finished. Here is the link to Quilters' Cache:
