I'm working on a wallet pattern that calls for an Edge Stitch. I know a wallet isn't a quilt, but you all are such a wealth of information, I thought I'd try here. What is an edge stitch? I've googled it, but can't find anything that shows and describes it.

you could use a blanket stitch- or a small zigzag

Hi, I would take an "edge stitch" to be a row of straight stitching close to the edge of the finished garment or article (done on the right side) to hold it all in position so that it doesn't roll out of shape. I may be wrong but this is how I would approach it.

I think I understand what an edge stitch is now, but I don't understand how it's used in this application. Here is what the step says.
Take the 4 1/2" by 8 1/2" piece of fabric and fuse the remaining 1 3/4" by 8 1/2" piece of interfacing and fuse it 1" in from one edge of the fabric. Fold the fabric over both edges of the interfacing and press into place completely inclosing the interfacing. Edge stitch one of the folded edges. |
edge stitch is just what is says. you want to stitch as close as you can to that folded edge.It will keep it looking sharp.

TIA Dorian Top stitching is between 1/16th of an inch and 1/4th of an inch from the edge. Sometimes both edge stitching and top stitching are included as details. |
