Elephant Collage Quilt
1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone, been a long time since I posted anything on here. Got quite excited when I saw this idea in a local quilt shop and just had to make one. The elephant is a collage of florals and put on a white cloth. The elephant shape is cut out and stuck to a grey background before quilting. Will post a picture when its all complete. Any suggestion on the binding would be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Love elephants and I love this. So colorful. Can't wait to see the finished product. BrendaK

Oh, that is sooooo pretty!
I love elephants! (I'm working on my first quilt and trying to make my label incorporate an elephant). I'm new to all things quilting, but I'd make the binding colorful, using various floral fabrics.
That will be beautiful when done, and I agree with Sleepy Hollow for the binding.
I love this idea. Are those YoYo's? If not I can see where they could be used to make this .
Very nice! Someone in one of my quilt clubs just did this same thing of a cat. I think a red binding would look good.
That is so beautiful and colorful. You did a great job of placement. Maybe the binding would be pretty in some floral fabric that you have used in making the elephant.
What a bright & cheerful elephant. On the binding, I would probably go with one of the bright wild fabric you used in the elephant. I would keep it simple and not use scraps.
Lovely! I especially love that you found one that serves as an eyeball ;-).
I misread the title a couple of times - A quilt with elephants on it for college? A college for elephants?
Anyway - now that I've opened the thread I can "read" the title properly - a very clever idea that is well done. |
Great idea! I'd try to find a stripe with those bright colors in it and do a bias binding with it.
Cute elephant! Is it a Laura Heine/Fiberworks pattern-?
Beautiful! so curious, did you cut these flowers from fabric and make your design? I keep looking at it trying to figure out how you created your beautiful quilt. It is awesome.
I just purchased this pattern. Can't wait to hear more about how it all went together and any tips you may have. Thanks for posting a picture.

I absolutely love this! I can't wait to see it quilted!
That's really neat! I've never seen anything like it. So many flowers, so pretty!
Super cute!
That is gorgeous. Reminds me of Indian festivals where elephants are decorated for parades.
An elegant elephant! You did an exceptional job on the placement of your flowers!
Is there a pattern for this and, if so, could you share the name? Thank you. |
Wow I never have seen anything like that! Thank you for sharing!

Super cute! I'd go with a simple blue binding. Cool colors tend to draw less attention to themselves than warm colors. The elephant should be the star of the show. Much as I love creative, artsy bindings, I think understated is the way to go in this case. The other thing to keep in mind is that typically prints will not show up as prints on the binding so if you go with a large floral print, it will just come out looking like random dabs of color. For that reason, I'd go with either a solid or a blender.
On the other hand, if you really want to dress it up, I think a jet black (http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics...mium/K040-114/)binding with some gold coated thread (http://www.berlinembroidery.com/goldworksupplies.htm)couched next to it would really look stunning. However, gold thread is fairly expensive. |
I saw this pattern my last visit to my LQS! It is just darling!!! Good Job! (I like the blue)
Beautiful! I would go with a bright floral binding. Now I see what I can make with all of those really bright florals that I collected over the years. Thanks for sharing.
Nice elephant.
Neato. I think that would be so fun to make. I think I would use fabric scraps pieced together for binding.
Thanks for all the lovely comments. Like both the blue and black fabric for binding. Don't really have enough of the florals as I only brought fat quarters to chop up for the flowers.
Below is a link to the pattern site: http://fiberworks-heine.com/vmchk/qu...ura-heine.html I purchased the pattern at a local quilt shop and they also had a caravan pattern. You fussy cut out flowers using steam a seam and attach in any order you like. I wanted to make the ear stand out so chose to use blue flowers within this area. Working on the quilting now. Will post a picture when its all completed. |
Oh how gorgeous is that.
Beautiful, it is so well done.
Love, love the elephant! I bound a quilt made with bright, modern florals and large blocks of off-white with a hot pink/chocolate brown polka dot print. I took my quilt top with me and asked the quilt shop owner to help. We both reached for the same print at the same time. What about a red with purple or hot pink polka dot that would contrast, but be equally whimsical as your florals.
That's gonna be awesome!
I love this, can't wait to see it when it's finished! I'm off to search for florals now!
Beautiful elephant!! My mother collected elephants and would love this quilt.
omg-- that is wonderful, so creative.
