Is Elmers glue available in Australia?
I have been watching the Sharon Schamber video http://quiltinggallery.com/2008/05/1...s-school-glue/ She uses Elmers glue to do her bindings.
Is this available in Austrailia? Any Aussie quilters use anything similar? I see where the label says washable all purpose glue on the Elmers bottle - I was wondering if the school glue we use out here would do the trick if Elmers isn't available here. Years ago our school glue left a stain and it was impossible to wash it off the kids' clothes, but I noticed the glue in the schools now seems to be a wash out type. Any clue where to get the metal tips Sharon uses here in Australia? I don't live anywhere near shops, I am very isolated, so have to do my buying online. Thanks in advance, Anna Australia |
anna i would imagine if you have a washable glue there it will work just as good as elmer's. i use glue sticks from my local dollar store as long as it is washable and it works just fine. try your local washable glue on some fabric samples and see what type results you get. as for the tips, i know you can get tips at craft stores or you may be able to adapt something for your purpose. perhaps the cake decorating tips that are sold in grocery stores or i know some makeup applicators have fine tips. i would just take a look around a local store or maybe even your home to see what you can repurpose before you try to buy special applicators or glue. you will be surprised at the many things in our home or just ordinary everyday things quilters repurpose for quilting.
there are several threads on this board were quilters talk about the many everyday things that they repurpose for quilting. take a look at a couple of them and see if it helps you get some helpful ideas to repurpose things. good luck. mary http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...g-t152963.html

I got Elmer's from my local "Officeworks" I think they are online as well. I haven't found anything like the metal tip though. The Elmers I got is a dual tip pen and it has one end with a reasonable small nozzle, which might work for you.
Let me know if you have any trouble, I could send you some. |
I make my own tips for Elmerd glue!!

I use Mr Magloo Stic....but mainly for tricky applique, not bindings, I pin those. I think most of the stick glues are reasonably safe, but I usually do a test on some scraps, just to see if it washes out ok.

I have used UHU glue sticks in the past for applique and recently bought Sewline fabric glue pen that is a stick with refills available, I've seen it in patchwork shops and Spotlight too. At the Sydney Quilt show I bought a small bottle of applique glue from one of the stands but I can no longer read the name on the label. Michelle Hill was using it on her work at the time. I personally agree with a former post that any washable glue would work ok.
I also found the Aussie Elmers site www.elmers.com.au/ but I'm not sure which is the glue referred to on this board. |
office works--clear liquid then i got a small]20ml] dispenser and fine metal tip from art supply----stick elmar glue in some wollies iamiin adelaide

Thanks everyone for your helpful tips. I've beena away a couple of days so have only just got to the computer.
Woody, thanks for your helpful offer, but I will be okay now, there is an Office Works about 200km from me, my dear son also found me some Bostick washable stick glue in the supermarket too. Thanks so much, Anna |
Mary,
Forgot to thank you for including Stuff you USE for Quilting, that isn't originally for Quilting!!! in your post. Anna |
I use the Elmers school glue sticks....the lid and glue is purple....much easier than liquid glue.....found a 2-pack of the smaller ones at back-to-school time for $.44 at Walmart.
