embroider fox eyes

My DGD wanted a quilt made from a fox pattern I found. I made 9 blocks from fat quarters that she selected. One of the blocks will match the Sonic character, Tails, which is yellow and has 2 tails. The problem is embroidering the eyes on the Tails character to match the stuffed animal. I have settings for my Janome that will match the zigzag pattern on the outside of the eyes, but cannot make the oval shape that outlines the eyes with the zigzag. I am thinking of using my pressure foot I use for FMQ and dropping the feed dogs so that I can turn the fabric to make the oval. Any other suggestions? I do plan to use stabilizer under the eye area.

Unless you are really good at FMQ you probably won't be happy with the ovals. I think I would draw the ovals on a piece of paper with a black sharpie, use a light box or window to pencil them on the fabric or a Frixion iron off pen. I would then put stabilizer behind the fabric and use a small satin stitch with my zig zag foot and turn the fabric as I stitch around the I ovals. Needle down function is helpful for satin stitching as you adjust the background fabric.

How tiny are the ovals? Can you applique them? Either turned or fusible raw edge that you satin stitch around? If they are really small, I would hand embroider them. Satin stitched ovals by hand go really fast.

I would make them out of felted wool.
