Embroidered Quilts

Hi, everyone,

I would like to make an embroidered/quilted sofa quilt. It would receive a lot of use, so would need washing fairly often. Is embroidery fairly durable, or would washing damage the embroidery?

Thanks for your opinions.

Are you talking about hand embroidery or machine? Machine embroidery is very durable. Just think about all the machine embroidered motifs on clothing. Hand, it really all depends on the stitches you use and what you use for floss. Most are very durable, especially if your stitches are small. And even if it wears out, embroidery stitches are not nearly as difficult to repair/replace as a piece of patchwork where the fabric has worn out. I'd say go for it.

If you use cotton thread, it would probably be fairly durable. I decorated some sheets with embroidery from my machine years ago and used rayon embroidery thread. It was not my best idea. It stood up for a while but got kind of faded after a while.
