Do any of you other quilters know if the Quilt designs from Joann's works with our Bernina 440QE? I know that Anne G. works but am not sure about any other designs.
Thanks

Candace 10-28-2010 08:16 AM

If it's the right size and comes in .art files it would work on the Berninas. But, I don't know of any designs sold at Joannes. Unless you're talking about the Viking dealer in Joannes.

brightstar_202 10-28-2010 09:01 AM

They are the Quilting designs by Quiltmaker it is a software.
But who it is for I do not know?

I use either a sticky stabilizer or spray adhesive and only hoop the stabilizer not the quilt. My machine has a fix which holds whatever I am embroidering on so it doesn't move. the hooping was the hardest part for me. I was very glad when I learned how to do the non-hoop.
:)

When you say your machine has a fix that holds it on.....do you mean that it bastes it before it starts to embroider? I just bought an embroidery machine that has a large hoop so I can embroider my quilts like this as I am not good with FMQ either. I intend to try and practice but until then do not want to ruin my quilts I currently need quilted. I have put too much time into some of these tops tp ruin them with my inexperience in fmq. Hoping I can use the embroidery quilting method till I acquire some fmq skills. I also bought this machine because it has the function of using the start/stop button to sew with out the foot pedal and was told this made fmq a little easier. Anything to help me get to mastering this fmq skill. I can't keep sending my tops out for someone to do on the longarm. Besides that I want to finish them myself. I will never be able to buy my own longarm enless I win the lottery. lol

Yes, the fix is a basting stitch. I use that one the hooped stabilizer without the quilt and also no thread so there will be just holes in the stabilizer. Then cut out inside the fixed area of the sticky stabilizer. Put the quilt on top of the stabilizer and do a fix with thread. It holds it in place and also you won't have stabilizer to get off of the back of your quilt. Hope that makes sense.
Practice on a sandwiched practice block before you do your quilt to get the feel of it.

I also just got an SE-400 Brother. Can you give me the embroidery site where you got your downloads? Thanks

quilter53 10-28-2010 09:26 AM

Quilter 53, I just purchased a lot of the quilting designs from EL, but haven't tried them yet, I was wondering if you have sewn them out yet? I love them, and am anxious to try them.[/quote]
I have used a lot of their emb. designs and have never had any trouble with any of them. I have purchased a lot of their quilting designs but have only used one of them and it is beautiful. It's the feather quilting heart.

quilter53 10-28-2010 09:32 AM

http://www.emblibrary.com is the website. It has 1000's of designs. they have sales every week. Sometimes only a 1.00 per design. I don't like to spend 60-70 on a cd when I might only use 1 design from it.

PUGLOVER1 10-28-2010 09:39 AM

I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT USEING MY EMBROIDERY MACHINE TO QUILT. SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA. I WILL HAVE TO TRY THIS. I HAVE BEEN SENDING MINE OUT TO BE QUILTED AND IT IS GETTING VERY EXPENSIVE, THEREFORE I DON'T MAKE ALL THE QUILTS I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE. THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS THREAD, AS YOU CAN LEARN SO MUCH AND OTHER QUILTERS GIVE SUCH GREAT INFO.

I just finished a quilt for gs. I used white thread on top and dark blue in the bobbin to match the backiing. I changed the tension so the blue wouldn't show on top but the white shows on back. Any ideas what else I could have done? Oh, it was FMQ.

It's very very difficult to get the tensions perfectly balanced. I've done this too (using very different colored or valued thread) and not been pleased with the results. So when I'm in the planning stage I try to use fabrics that don't require a huge value difference in quilting threads. Seems like less hassle to me!

gramquilter2 10-28-2010 11:52 AM

I have a Bernina and have used the embroidery quilt designs to quilt my smaller table toppers, wall hangings etc and it works great. I have never tried doing it with a large quilt, but I would think it would work.

I used John Deer's Quilter's Collection to embroider/quilt my quilt - you can see more pictures and a more detailed explanation in the thread 'My Christmas Dear Jane Quilt' - use the 'Search' feature to find it. I hoop but don't need to use stabilizer - the quilt sandwich is heavy enough.
Joanne
Edit: I used the same color in the bobbin as I used in the needle.

What machine did you use. Love it

PUGLOVER1 10-28-2010 04:38 PM

I WAS SO IMPRESSED WITH THIS IDEA THAT I JUST WENT TO WWW.OREGONPATCHWORKS.COM AND ORDERED SOME QUILT DESIGNS. I LOVE THIS FOR TABLE RUNNERS, WALL-HANGINGS AND MORE. THANKS FOR THE GOOD INFO. THE QUILT IS BEAUTIFUL. I'LL BE SEWING MINE WITH A VIKING DESIGNER 1.

jitkaau 10-28-2010 04:45 PM

Lots of people use embroidery for this purpose, and there are plenty of machine quilting programs you can buy for your domestic machine.

hot grandma 10-28-2010 04:53 PM

Hay Davida, I do use the embroidery machine for quilting. I even did a Christmas quilt with snowflakes embroidered on for the quilting. you do not need a big hoop only one that will support the embroidery pattern. Lot of work but it turned out very nice.

Jackie R 10-28-2010 05:12 PM

Those are some really good quilting ideas. Thanks.

janetter 10-28-2010 05:31 PM

I also have done this method. I made a split rail and in each square embroidered an outline of a cat for my niece. I really liked it. Used a Brother 150

PUGLOVER1 10-28-2010 05:56 PM

HEY JOANNE, DID YOU USE A 4 X 4 HOOP DESIGN AND DID IT SHRINK THE QUILT ALOT??? YOU SURE DID A VERY NICE JOB!! AWESOME...

I have the same opinion of the BSR! It was just annoying to
me when I test drove it, the saleswoman said that I've been doing so long without out that I didn't need it.
I agreed with her.

Trying to understand. To embroider on a quilt, I can sandwich it within the hoop and let it rip? I don't need to use stabilizer or anything else, just put it in the hoop and go? Thanks.

connie_1936 10-28-2010 08:13 PM

the quilt patterns you can buy on the net are great. i use them all the time. i have a janomi 11000se with the quilting upgrade and the magnetic quilting hoop. i got hooked on machine embroidering my blocks. hope i can get the pics to attach. my dealer is putting my 11000 on ebay this weekend, i'm getting a multiple needle machine. will piece on my 30 yr old workhorse. go to "JANOMI AMERICA" to see the quilting features i'm talking about. enjoy, connie
sorry, couldn't get the pics to attach will try again

I just bought the Janome 11000...can you explain to me how to do what you're talking about? Haven't had machine long but FMQ is difficult for me. I do practice and have done a few projects but getting tension right and keeping stitches even and design balanced is hard for me.

do you have the quilting upgrade? it comes with a large magnetic hoop. watch the video with marie osmond about quilting on janomi's site "janomi america" . take a class from your dealer if you can

ohhhh i wish i had a embroidery machine after hearing that you can quilt instead FMQ on the quilt , it looks great on the quilts ive seen it used on

fish92241 10-28-2010 09:11 PM

I have the Bernina BSR and truly love it. I don't try to go so fast. I just relax and the stitches are perfect every time. I also have it on my Gracie frame.

maxi 10-28-2010 09:54 PM

I do both. I hoop the quilt like some have said, stitch it out then sometimes fill in with FMQ. One teacher took us to a famous person's work in a book and said "look at her stitches" "she wins awards and her's are not perfect" "so get over it and enjoy it". That was freeing for me and I have been doing it myself every since.

What is fun on the Janome 11000 is to resize circles or stars and over lap some then quilt that all over a baby quilt.

I also use painters tape on the hoop grid so I know where the design will go. I seem to be able to move the hoop around and quilt quite a bit that way fitting them in.

mardilee 10-29-2010 05:20 AM

I have a Janome 11000SE. It comes with automatic stippling patterns. I used them to stipple the entire border of a quilt and it looked great. The trick is to make sure you line up the border exactly each time you re-hoop. Then it's almost impossible to tell where the pattern stopped and started. I have also made blocks with an embroidery design in the center and stippling around the design. It looks great.

I have a B with stitch regulator, and have not practiced enough to FMQ. Thanks for jogging my memory, need to put that high on my priority list for 2011. Oh My!!!

I'm still using my good old Pfaff 2140 upgraded to 2170. It dosn't have the wide throat of the new ones, so I can't do the BIG designs, but I had no trouble with this quilt. I think I could embroider/quilt up to a full size.

I've FMQed a queen size, but I think I would have trouble trying to use a hoop with a quilt that big. It's not the hoop itself, it's trying to stuff the rest of the quilt past it that would be the problem. I could do it if I used one of Marti Mitchell's methods and quilted only part of the quilt at a time.

The blocks are 4-1/2" finished. I embroidered the designs on-point. The designs in the pieced blocks are 4-1/2 " x 4-1/2". The ones in the white blocks are approx. 3-1/2 x 3-1/2. I say approx, because 4D figures out what size to make them for the space I choose for them, so I don't have to do it! I wanted the central oval as big as possible in the pieced blocks, so that I would have room on the back for the labels. I wanted more 'space' around the ones in the white blocks.

The embroidery didn't shrink the quilt. That may be because it was already sandwiched. It measures the same after embroidering/quilting as it did before!

Then in the white stripes, I used my walking foot and one of the built-in stitches in my regular sewing machine.

Were these blocks with batting and backing or just he pieced top. I have an embroidery machine and plan to use it to quilt the center square of a block I am working on, but I want it to show to the back too, so I am layering all three like a quilt as you go. Like what you did.

That's how I did it - hoop, but no stabilizer. Get it as smooth as you can in the hoop - and make sure the quilt is NOT pulling on the outside of the hoop. In other words, you sort of push the quilt TOWARD the outside of the hoop before you start embroidering.

Minnisewta 10-29-2010 11:59 AM

I have the Bernina BSR but can't say that I love it as yet. My biggest problem is the arm is too short for me to move around enough to make it look nice. Most of the time I do straight lines across my quilts.

This is the BEST site, I downloaded some designs and they were too big for my hoop, I emailed them and they reduced the designs to the smaller size, I downloaded them and that was at NO ADDITIONAL COST! They have a customer for life, plus you can download designs and when you go to your purchase history, you can download anything you have purchased again and again, even the free ones, and speaking of free ones, they have some really nice designs.

Lovely quilt, did you do it as the whole quilt or individual blocks, If you did it a s the whole quilt, HOW?

I sandwiched the whole quilt with basting spray, safety pinned the edges, then used the smallest hoop that would fit the design. For the borders, I used my continuous hoop - it's easier to maneuver, but you can't use it anywhere but borders. It's a lap-sized quilt, so it wasn't a problem to stuff the quilt in the throat of my SM.

I've used my embroidery machine for a long time for quilting. It is so much easier. Good luck

Wow thanks everyone i was ready to find another hobby because i could never quilt my tops. I refused to send out to long arm because i would rather spend that money on fabric. I am now motivated to use embroidery machine and keep practing FMQ. THANKS

MsSewer 10-29-2010 05:21 PM

I have a Husqvarna embroidery machine and used it to embroider a quilt instead of quilting it. The quilt was a square in a square set on point with plain blocks and sashing between the blocks. I got a pattern (very open) from the Emb. Library. I just embroidered the plain blocks and used a solid color as backing. Now it looks nice front and back. I didn't use any stabilizers.
