Embroidery Thread for FMQ

Has anyone used embroidery thread to do FMQ? Just wondering if it's an option, and wouldn't cause too many problems ...

thanks!

I use Isacord 40 wt. trilobal polyester embroidery thread to do FMQ. Leah Day uses this to FMQ. I have good success with it. There are probably other similar threads too.

Yes, I regularly use Hemingsworth embroidery threads for FMQing.
Gives a nice lustre to the stitches.

THank you! I have tons of Brother Embroidery thread, and don't want to go shopping (again LOL)

I have used Brother, Floriani and Exquisite brands EMB thread for quilting projects and applique ones too. I also use the pre-wound bobbins if the color is a good match for the backing fabric. You can also wind the EMB thread and use as bobbin thread if you want to match threads.

The Brother thread seems to take some effort to break by pulling with your hands. Our LQS did a thread break demo one day and Brother won.

I use Metro embroidery thread, I love their service, price and lots of beautiful colors.

Why not rayon?

One of my first FMQ classes was with Leah Day and so I learned to use Isacord about 5 years ago... I also use Glide and have no problems with either.

Rayon gives a beautiful lustre but has a reputation for being delicate in terms of abrasion. I’ve used it a lot in art/wall quilts and it does quite well, both using the decorative stitches on my sewing machine and also doing FMQ. I would hesitate to use it in a quilt that is going to be used/washed frequently- like a baby quilt because I’m not sure how well it would hold up over time and lots of use.

That said, I’ve never seen a write up showing the results of any tests done to determine rayon thread’s reliability over the long term when used for quilting.
