embroidery thread question
 

Joanns has a gutermann sewall thread set on sale tomarrow 50% off. I just bought a embroidery machine and need to buy lots of thread but I am not sure if this is the right kind. Can anyone help me.Thanks for you help.

I have a brother machine and it will use any thread I out in it, I do not want to pay those high prices it may shine a little more but that is about it. I use the surger cones for 1.99 at Joanns and bottom line thread on the bottom.

I've been using Isacord and Floriani and like them both. I use the thread that I can buy locally, that wears well and doesn't mess with my machine. The Floriani is a little shinier and stands out a little more than the Isacord. I like the way is looks.

If I'm not mistaken the sew-all thread is polyester and it's meant for regular sewing. You could probably use it for embroidery but actual embroidery thread is so much nicer. It has a lovely sheen to it that makes the embroidery really stand out. There are online sites that sell embroidery thread sets, and Joann's may even have some. I don't know for sure as I live in Canada and we don't have Joann's here.

The Brothers rep at a Sit and Sew told us that polyester serger thread is fine for embroidery. It has a nice shine, and there are a LOT of colors. If you want it thicker, use 2 threads. You can even use 2 shades to get a more interesting look. I use Superior's Bottom Line in the bobbin. You have to adjust the top tension down a bit when you use BL in the bobbin, because it is much finner than whatever you are using on top.

Polyester doesn't build up lint like rayon and cotton - and it is much less expensive. Try it, and if you don't like it, you haven't wasted a lot of money on it.

Thanks for the tips. I was having some problems with my Floriani breaking and a friend suggested a Topstitch needle on my machine--no more breaking--Yeah.

I agree...why use any kind of thread to save $$$ when the Emb Machines are so costly these days...Putting a "off" thread on your machine is like putting Volks Wagon tires on a Cadilac...it won't get you very far......just start a stash just like you did with fabric....get a little at a time on sale and before you know it...you are all set..!!!! the Floridana is a great thread and Isocord is too.. And you can find them at lower prices on line.....Good luck !!!! And enjoy your Emb Machine....they are so much fun and you can do so many projects with one....

I have had my embroidery machine for 5 years and I bought my
first big "batch" of thread from an ebay store called Threadart.

The thread is ok, but it is by far not great, but it was something
for me to use to start and learn with.

I am working on slowly building up my Floriani thread collection,
but I HAVE been looking pretty hard at this thread from Amazon
and it is 1/2 the price and twice as much thread as when I got my
threadart brand.

Before you buy a whole lot of anything, take a spool home and try it out. Some machine don't like some threads. I use Isacord and Robison Anton, and sometimes Floriani and have good luck with them all.

I have had very good luck with Madiera. I purchased the chest of small spools and then I purchased the chest of larger spools. The larger one is a much better deal. I have a Janome 11000 and it does have to have Janome embroidery thread in the bobbin.
