Embroidery thread or quilting thread? Help!
 

I am hand stitching a college emblem on the back of my quilt, but I am only stitching it on the backing. The front of the quilt is red/black/wht and the backing is solid black. I want the front to be the "nice non college" quilt and I want the back to the the "college" quilt. So after I stitch the emblem on the backing and then put the layers together I will will stitch in the ditch with invisible quilting thread. But what I want to know is do I use quilt thread or can I use embroidery thread to stitch the emblem? I am going to double sew it so the emblem is in red and white thread side by side. In my head the embroidery thread will be brighter and stand out more.

What should I do?

If you mean the embroidery thread will shine more it will.That being said you can get some heavy weight thread that will stand out too.

There is no "quilting" reason to determine what thread you use. You could stitch it in yarn, metallics, embroidery floss, whatever you chose. You will have a reversible quilt. When reversible quilts are made, the side are made independently of each other and combined with the batting inbetween and then quilted. There is no limit to the creativity you can show on either side of your quilt.

Thank you TanyaL! I needed that license for creativity! Just some one to push me off the cliff. Lol. I have joined some ladies at church to learn more about quilting and I feel stifled when I am around . I don't follow the fabric rules and I use as much recycled fabric as I can get my hands on. My batting's are blankets, mattress covers etc. I use what ever I have on hand. I have no budget to go purchase more. With that said I am going to use embroidery thread!! And even add to my design. Thanks!!!!!

Definitely follow the advice you got here...you are making essentially two quilts--do what you want. I definitely would use embroidery thread if I were doing embroidery, which is what it sounds like you are doing.

I use all sorts of thread for hand quilting and for embellishment. I particularly like embroidery floss because you can get it in shiny or flat and you can separate the strands and use as many as you like. Also, using a very thin ribbon can be very effective (as in silk ribbon embroidery). Have fun, I hope this helps a bit.
