My opinion -- give the quilt top and get it quilted later

I totally agree, just give a note that you will have it quilted. Then it will be like she is receiving two gifts as she will be so looking forward to receiving it back finished!!

If I spray baste I can shove a full quilt into my 6.25" throat into the sewing machine and have it quilted in two days. You CAN do it. :) (Bigger takes three days), I used a quarter inch foot on because that's the only foot that words with my quilting guide.

I have to agree with giving the top now and quilting at a later date. That is what I had to do with each of my son's (graduation) quilts because I did not meet graduation deadline. Everyone "oooooh-ed and ahhhh-ed" anyway when they opened the wrapped quilt top! The quilts were ready by the time they left for college in September! Good luck with this!

I started quilting it with the feed dogs down and the presser foot tension at 0. So far so good except I ran out of thread so I will have to finish it tomorrow. The spray baste is a dream product! I will say it's not as good as if my quilter were doing it but it is turning out just fine. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I will post pictures when I'm done.

Where are you in In. I'm by South Bend, Mishawaka. Too bad we didn't get this notice sooner. Just pin like crazy and stitch in the ditch, it is fast!!!

Well I got the quilt completely finished last night and gave it to my DH's grandmother today.....all without one single photo.  Next time I go to see grandma I will bring the stinking camera!

Bernadette, I am in Bremen. Not far from South Bend/Mishawaka at all.
