I need your help!

Ok, so I have been making this quilt for the past like, 2 freakin' months, and I bought this spray glue for basting, it says right on the can that it's for all kinds of stuff including lightweight cottons to fleece and all that stuff, so I used it, and it stained my fabric!
I have washed it twice, soaked it overnight in oxy-clean, and I don't know what else to do!
It's for a christmas present, so I'm screwed already, but if I figure out how to get the stains out, then maybe we can wash it afterwards (it's for my mother) please please please help me!

I've attatched some pics of the stain spots.

beachlady 12-24-2008 11:44 AM

I have no idea, but I am sure someone will - Good Luck!

Izy 12-24-2008 11:48 AM

It looks greasy...have you tried something that will remove grease? what a shame, I hope you fix it up soon

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-24-2008 11:48 AM

It doesn't even give any clean-up instructions on the can either! The only thing it says is to clean the nozzle with mineral spirits...what the heck is that? Can I use it on my fabric too?

Izy 12-24-2008 11:50 AM

Have you got some scraps of the fabric., spray that and try ANYTHING, then at least you wont risk making the problem worse....

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-24-2008 12:00 PM

Ya, it's not actually greasy, I tried some kitchen products (I know, bad idea) but it's really just like dried glue. It is solvent based, so any solvents should work. I'm trying alcohol right now, but maybe nail polish remover or acetone (ack!). I'm just worried about ruining the fabric too!

Izy 12-24-2008 12:03 PM

Well, you haven't got alot of choice, has it dried stiff?, you may have no choice but to get unpicking to salvage the top.......it looks as if you may have used too much, as it looks in blobs...difficult to tell, what a crying shame

Chele 12-24-2008 12:14 PM

What a shame! Do tell us what type of adhesive it was. I'd like to avoid that product. I think rubber cement thinner (Bestine) would do the trick. Try it on a scrap first. Good luck!

nor'easter 12-24-2008 12:16 PM

What's the brand name of the spray you used? Is it petroleum based? Sometimes aerosol propellants drip from the nozzle and that looks like what may have happened to you. Maybe we can find a cure if you tell us the brand name?

Moonpi 12-24-2008 12:23 PM

Mineral spirits is the same ingredient in paint thinner. If you pre-washed the fabrics, I bet you can use it on them without running the dyes. Can you create the stain on some scrap to experiment?

Who manufactured the stuff, and do they have a number to call? Timing being what it is, you may not get a response til after Xmas.

If it has a poison warning on, you may be able to track down a safe solvent that way.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-24-2008 12:25 PM

K, so it's just like an aerosol pain can, but the nozzle was weird and the stuff came out in strings and it kind of made blobs as it fell. I figured it was just like that and it would wash out. I did shake it really really well before using it too, so that's not the problem

It's called Sluyter feather spray 470. I bought it at a fabric store...

By the way, it's not really stiff, maybe just a tiny bit stiffer than the fabric that's not affected.

gcathie 12-24-2008 12:25 PM

have you tried any of the stain remover for quilts???

mgshaw 12-24-2008 12:27 PM

mineral spirits is a product similar to paint thinner. I use it when refinishing wood for clean up. I have gotten it on my clothes more than once  and it has never hurt any of the fabric before so it might be worth a shot to try it.

Your mom will understand, what does the front look like. Best of luck, it could be a New Year present :?

deerviewquilting 12-24-2008 01:28 PM

Do you have a place to source Synthrapol detergent locally? You can get it at Dharma Trading. It removes impurities from fabrics as a prewash before dying fabrics. I wonder if it will work on stains.

Well, it doesn't show up as much in the front, here is a pic of the front.

dojo36 12-24-2008 03:20 PM

one way out is you could make a patch or two with your name, date, etc etc on it and hand stitch it to the back over the stains. you could make the patches maybe heart shaped and write a little poem on one if you have to use more than one. maybe make it look like you did it all on purpose. your Mom will love it!

sandpat 12-24-2008 04:12 PM

dojo has a good idea. I'm straining my brain trying to think of what to try....lemon juice?? I hope something works...it is really pretty!

sewjoyce 12-24-2008 05:24 PM

That's it -- just put a small applique over the stains -- hearts, flowers, etc. -- your mom will love it and never know you had a problem....

(Or you could use small machine embroideries -- just embroidery on the front of the quilt and use the same color in the bobbin.)

ScubaK 12-24-2008 06:20 PM

Way to go Moonpi...for looking up the specs!
Hope this works!
Also, have you tried Greased lightning cleaner...it takes care of everything.
K

grammo013 12-24-2008 09:08 PM

I have used hairspray on stains like that. The spray must have been old and did not mix right. Try it on a scrap first. Hair spray has saved many things that has glue on them for me.

sewmuch 12-24-2008 11:37 PM

Your quilt is beautiful, I don't have a solution, but I would sure take the spray back and tell them what happened.

Barb M 12-25-2008 01:56 AM

My husband worked at a dry cleaners when he was younger, and then became a mechanic. He says that carb cleaner is exactly the same chemical that is in dry cleaning chemicals. He has used carb cleaner many times when we've had badly stained clothing and it works perfect, you can get it in any auto supply store. Hope this will help.

And you know, the quilt is so beautiful, your mom would want you to give it to her anyways, tell her what happened, and then take it back after christmas to clean it if you dont have time before

PS the carb cleaner, you spray it on, and then rub the spot, and then wash

K, so I gave my mom the quilt anyways, and explained what happened, and she doesn't care. We're going to try the hairspray thing, and we'll try the carb cleaner too, thanks for all the suggestions! I'll go through all of them untill I find something that works :)

Grandma Cindy 12-25-2008 07:42 PM

it is beautiful, so many little squares...

quilterj 12-26-2008 02:59 AM

Did you get the stain out?

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 12-26-2008 05:30 AM

Haven't tried yet, we're going to buy some stuff today, since everything was closed yesterday.

sandpat 12-26-2008 05:34 AM

Good luck! I know how you feel, I gave my Dad an embroidered shirt that had a HOLE cut in it because I had to take out something. :( :(

Marilyn Philips 12-26-2008 04:14 PM

  I would definitely try mineral spirits which are available at hardware stores, Lowes, Home Depot, paint departments in chain grocery stores, etc. and it is really cheap. I use it to remove paint from my hands, paint brushes, and paint spots on my clothes if necessary. I have never had a problem with it removing color or damaging my clothing, but you will have to wash it out well to remove the odor. Just try putting some on a piece of toweling and rubbing gently. If that doesn't work then I don't think anything will. If that stuff was not coming out of the can in a nice spray I would return it to the store because that is not what spray adhesives are supposed to do. You also should only use a light spray because a little goes a long way. Hope this helps.

Carol W 12-26-2008 05:32 PM

Good luck!!!

Let us know how you removed the stain.

sewsewquilter 12-26-2008 05:34 PM

Hope all turns out well.
