I am making my DH's lap quilt bigger so it will cover him from chin to toes! First of all we had to search for complimentary fabric, then I took the border off. I stitched some new batting to the old batting using a wide zigzag. I added wide pieces for the backing and now am adding 3" wide strips on the top using the Quilt As You Go method so there will be no quilting when it's done. Unfortunately, after getting it almost all done I found the perfect fabric that I should have used - :( but it's too late now and I don't want to make the lap quilt any larger. So I am going to make corner blocks out of the new fabric. Three strips 3" wide comes out to 2 1/2" when stitched times 3 strips equals 7 1/2" wide borders. So I'll make corner blocks that will finish out at 7 1/2". I will need to do some quilting in them. What a mess!!!! :)

He's at the age that he has an emotional attachment to his baby quilt... so I'd enlarge it the best you can and make a new quilt too-- to keep his bed 'safe' and be there for when he's ready for a new attachment.

I still have my son's baby quilt here at my house-- in tatters-- and he's 27 and getting married next weekend. I am just as attached to it, because it reminds me of him as a baby.
